TIPPET RINGS

Would like some feedback on what you guys think of these. Seems they would be a leader saver but are they strong enough for larger fish like pike or steelhead and given their small size, do they hold up in really cold water and not become brittle and break apart with a fish on?

Get brittle and break apart in water? They're metal. Not going to happen.

I've been using them for at least 10 years now without any issues. I only use them for really cold weather fishing when the fingers have a hard time tying knots. They're great. They hold up to steelhead really well. They have held up to salmon up to 20 pounds, but they were late season ones without the fight of the fresh ones. I've never had one break. I'm sure if you use a leader and tippet that's stronger than the little metal ring, they would be the breaking point, but I believe there are different sizes made to accomodate different sized tippets.

Thanks Slate. I knew they were made of metal, but different metals react differently in varying temps. I've used them just fine for trout this time of year and wanted to hear from people who used them for bigger fish in colder waters. Think I'm gonna give em a try this fall.

The moment of truth. Where all other things unconsciously melt away from our minds the instant a fish takes our fly. We stand there on the water with wide eyes, caught in a battle stance with an idea of confidence and hope

I use some braided/furled leaders that have the rings on them. They do make it nice for tippet changes, just have to tie a clinch knot and its ready to go. However, when I construct my own leaders, I do not use them.
