try a decent size feeder creek at night flowing into the river, i guess they ambush smaller fish in the shallows at night, a few years ago a friend and i were fishing the shenango in pulaski ware deer creeks meets shenango anyways it was a day trip and darkness was aproaching and we caught 6/7 walleye tossin husky jerks up to the mouth with a stop n go retreive none were kept the biggest was 23'' maybe, im not sure how clean the fish are, ill only keep fish from the shenango below the **** , unless its a wall hanger

Well your not alone!! Had the itch to get out locally and fish the Allegheny on Thursday and I got skunked.

Trolled for 3 hours and not one lousy bite. Tried about every plug in my box on the inline boards: deep Reef Runners, Taildancers, Bomber Long A's, Bagley Bango's, etc...Tried to work the 15-20ft range and also tried in shallower towards evening. Fish finder had a surface temp of 84 degrees.

Guess it's just too hot! I've always wondered where the fish go during the dog days of summer! I got a nice 29 incher trolling last year in August, but this year has produced nothing noteworthy.

If you watch the sonar in the rivers, it is easy to understand why nothing's biting.  There is an abundance of baitfish.  EVERYWHERE!

I went up north on the allegheny thinking it may be cooler water. Threw everything at em, taildancers, shad raps, husky jerks, trolled and casted. Then did multiple drifts with gumdrops w/ crawlers and minnies... not one bite all day.

IMO from many years of fishing the allegheny river for multiple species, the walleye bite is dead is the summer except for a strangler here or there or fishing the dams. Once the water gets below 65deg. things will pick up. I can say that i did get a few 20+" walleyes trolling 8" wileys this summer for muskys on the river but they are the exception.

true all dat. i dont think they move until night this time of year. if youre going to catch them during the day you gotta go big and deep. unfortunately the river is a snagfest and the $$$ in lost lures adds up quick. a lure retriever is a must, but depending on current its hard to get over top of the snag. right now its USUALLY easy to get your lure back but its tough to get more than a few fish until the water cools off. just sayin'

You guys have it right for this time of year. I used to pick up the occassional eye while fishing with 4-5" chubs for flatheads, they were always quality fish, but never common. The only mediocre success I have ever had this time of year was trolling hot and tots and similar plugs at night. It was never an easy process, but again the fish we picked up were generally all 20+.

like clockwork every year. rivers are awesome fishing. only thing that could/would make them better is if the docks were left in longer and put in earlier. just sayin'

I hear ya man, I b!tch about it every year. It is a real pain to launch a boat solo in March/April with a foot of sludge on the ramp and no docks in. By the time they get the things in my eye fishing is usually tapering off.

waders are a must. hopping out when loading can be interesting. its ridiculous BUT i'm glad the fishing is so good and i'm glad MOST all are caught and released. cant imagine theres another system in the world where more legal/illegal walleyes/fish get caught and released. just sayin'
