ELK HUNT

I do believe we will be going out west next october for a self-guided elk hunt.I'Ve been looking at new scopes it's between the leupold and the nikon monarch. Also i have a 270 browning A-bolt i was going to take but not quite sure on if it has the power out to farther ranges. If anybody have advice on what i should take let me know.I definitly want to get a new scope but don't want to spend a fortune this is because this is the only time it will get used.I used my daughters .243 for deer hunting it fits me a little better espically with the extra layers on.

Never elk hunted or gone out west but I would go with leupold over nikon.  Just my opinon.  I know alot of people who have leupold scopes from 4 powers to 4-12x50.  For the money you cant beat them.  I am saving up for the leupold rifleman in 2-7x33 for my slug gun, or inline.

I like Leupolds as well.  I have a VX-I and a VXII.  I like the adjustments on the II much better.w_w.

If it has fins and gills, I'm there.

I have always owned leupolds, however before I went out west I put a burris fullfield II on my .300 win mag. It is an awesome scope! If you put it side by side with my leupold, after about 2 minutes of looking back and forth, you can see a slight difference in the glass, but the burris is actually brighter than my leupold. It shoots great and has held up well. Lifetime warranty on them and you can get one with a free set of binoculars (which are not really that good) for $199 usually through any of the major retailers.

I still like the leupolds, but on a budget, I consider them equal in quality and will buy more burris scopes in the future.

Better too far back, than too far forward.

I have a Nikon Monarch -- good glass to look through -- will not hold zero -- had to have repaired by Nikon (3) three times -- last time on 8-2-2010 they replaced it with 5-20x44 SF M NP -- have yet to use it -- rifle is being rebarrelled Rem 17 cal -- I also have Leupold's scopes of which I would only buy now Coot

Chicken your .270 A Bolt will work just fine for elk. No problem at 300 yds. a 150 or 160gr would be my choice. Pick a good bullet such as the Nosler Partition. As far as glass goes buy the best you can afford. I have Nikon Monarchs, and Leupolds Vari X III's, but like Zeiss the best. Some great deals on eBay if you have the time to watch and bid.
