wipers and night fishing at lake aurthur

hey guys me and a buddy of mine have been fishing lake aurthur at night once a weekend for about the past month. We have been trying to use alewifes by throwing a casting net for them and we catch a few here and there enough to fish with. We have never been skunked we have always caught atleast a largemouth but we havent had much luck with the wipers. We fish pretty much a little ways up from mcdaniels launch. Last weekend we caught 7 small bullhead catfish and a really nice channel cat. Do any of you guys out there have any advice as to if the wipers are still biting or whats the best way to catch them?? It seems to us that the bite is directly related to the alewifes surfacing and it seems to shut off about 2:30am but lately they havent been surfacing much at all?? any advice would be great thanks so much guys

Its been awhile but what I did in August was slow wind a jointed chartruese and white belly rapala so it looks like a snake going across the water but slower. Work your points. If nothing happens after a 1/2 to 3/4 hr. move to the next but be quiet. Try to drift into a bay and work slow. You will catch a striper.

I am no expert, but things slow down considerably by this time of year. As the water warms I try and stick close to areas with good deep water access up there. If you are seeing the alewives and not hearing the popping, it is a safe bet that the wipers are not there....

I've only had success at night in the early Summer.  Hook them in one nostral and out the other, with no weight and let them swim free.  Try to keep your line tight, and set the hook as soon as you feel a fish grab it, they usually don't hit the live baits like they do surface lures.  It is a bit of a finesse approach.  Tied to a balloon works too, but hard to cast and tangles up the line.  You will hear the fish bite, which is nice for night fishing.

Doing what Mika said will keep you from spending half of the night netting bait, and usually just as many fish.  Although there are nights where an alewife = a fish on.

Just a reminder, you must have a permit to use a cast net in Pa. If you don't I would sugest going to this link. You don't want that citation !

The night bite frenzy has been over for a couple of weeks now but you can still pull them out from the roadbed (seems like they've been suspending along the sides lately).  For the night bite we were banging them on bombers and thundersticks.  Small bluegills and large shiners have been producing along the roadbed when you can keep the bait alive under the constant assault from catfish.
