Water Leak?

Gentlemen, I am on the horns of a dilema. My water company just informed me that my consumption has gone from 1,500 gal/month to 9000 gal/month. I have no leaks and no green spots in my yard. No taps or toilets running. So, a faulty valve? Or leak in inlet line? I hope it's not the inlet line because it's 400 feet to the road! Any ideas? Since I'm away from home a lot; the water company suggested that somebody may be coming in at night and taking water when I'm not there. It doesn't take long to swipe 500-1,000 gallons. and for 7500 gallons that would only be about 7 trips a month.

BTW: I did come home twice and find my front faucet dripping but I turned it off tight each time? ? ?

This should be moved to off topic.

well, if it's just one month and done, then I'd say someone stole some water....If it's month after month, you've got a leak...walk the ground above your water line to see if it sinks anywhere.....that much water would make any ground squishy big time.....

7500 gallons of water in the yard would be noticed, unless you have excellent drainage.

What i am thinking is that someone is filling swimming pools. 1000 gallons is roughly 133 cubic feet of water, A 15 x 15 x 5 foot pool would take about 8500 gallons.

Still,  lets just assume 10 gallons per minute on an outside hose. 600 per hour about an hour and a half for 1000 gallons. Long time to be waiting around if you do not want to be caught.

Why did I KNOW the slip & Slide pic would show up? LOL! that was last month and even filling two small pools and using the slip & slide I only used 4,500.
lso don't forget I live in the country and there are lots of cisterns that need filled. And if you're only taking 3-500 gallons at a time then it's only 45 minutes.

If the meter is at the road, you should be able to turn everything off in the house at the meter should not be spinning.  If it is , shut off where it enters the house to determine if it is before or after that point.  I will say a leaking comode can use alot of water.

    Jack,
Could be a faulty meter, especially of the electronic type. But highly unlikely.
Your water company should be able to send a rep ( at a price ) to come down and inspect with a listening device to pinpoint any underground leaks.
But, I'd first do what ^ said and also start logging your readings, especially when you're away.

    Jack,
Was it an actual or estimated reading?
I'd start reading the meter myself everyday at the roughly the same time of day and see the pattern of your usage. If you don't do that then at least read it before and after you leave for any amount of time. Also you could set-up a game camera to try and get a pic of any perps.

I was actucally thinking more alone the line of claymore mines set up opn a motion sensor delay. But the weird thing is; if somebody really needed water I'd give it to them for free. So I'm thinking it must be a leak.

where is your meter located? most are located right where the water comes in to the house hear if it is then it has to be in the house somewhere. or as said someone is helping them selves when you are not home.

Where is your shutoff valve located? If you have one where it enters the house that should make this easier to determine the location at least.
