Legal ?

My son and I were sitting at the light at Bayfront connector and 6th st last nite. A truck towing a 20ft crestliner flew by heading towards Lampe Marina on the connector. What did we see but 2 boys riding in the boat. My son who has his driving permit asked if that was legal to have passengers in the boat while being trailered down highway? any thoughts ?

No, its not ! Niether is just riding in the bed of a pickup. Even before the seatbelt law it was not allowed, it's just plain stupid. Major safety concern for the passengers!

I am pretty sure that the only way a passenger can legally ride in a trailer under tow is with a 5th wheel camper.  A 5th wheel is considered part of the vehicle or something and is legal.  That only includes campers though, you can't pile a bunch of people on your car hauler and take off.

Yes, fifth wheel camper is the only legal passenger area. IF you have a 2 inch or larger hitch ball and a wired intercom between the trailer and cab of the towing vehicle. (as per the PA Vehicle Code, Title 75)

On the internet, EVERYONE is entitled to their opinion!

A friend lost a young son several years ago, they were hauling their 14' boat in the bed of their pick up and the kids were riding in the bed as well. The boat shifted and started sliding out of the truck, the boy tried to hold it in and was pulled out by it. Tragic lesson...

The following comes from the PA DMV website....

    "PASSENGERS IN AN OPEN-BED TRUCK
An open-bed pickup truck or open flatbed truck may not be driven at a speed of more than 35 mph, if any person
is occupying the bed of the truck. Such a truck may not be driven at any speed, if a child under 18 years of age is
occupying the bed of the truck.
    Exceptions to this law are:
    • A child of a farmer, who is being transported between parts of a farm or farms owned or operated by the farmer
in order to perform work on the farm or farms.
    • A child employed to perform farm labor, who is being transported between parts of a farm or farms owned or
operated by the child's employer or employers.
    • A child possessing a valid hunting license, who is being transported between a hunting camp and a hunting site
or between hunting sites during hunting season.
    • A child, who is a participant in an officially sanctioned parade, only during the course of the parade."

The only other law states that passengers may be hauled in a 5th wheel trailer if there is a means of electronic AND visual communication between the vehicle and trailer.

Better too far back, than too far forward.
