I have found the same with other lures shaped like that. Like the small "wiggle warts" and "hotshots". They have nice action but you have to go slow or they spin out. I have some Yo Zuri Pins Minnows and they need calm water and slow retrieve too.

I've picked up some nice slabs this summer @ pymie on the small hot n tots....inline spinners...
even got a couple on harnesses...deep.
Those snap beans look like they'd work great for 'em.

I'd never trolled for crappie specifically, before this year, but I do now.

I just put enough split shot to get down to the desired depth. I thinking about trying to take off the treble hook and put on a single to make them more brush friendly. Don't be afraid to try a small spinnerbait for Slabs. I caught some of my better ones right before dark on a spinnerbait while Bass fishin.

yes, good for trout, but I agree that they suck in current. Most really small crank and jerks do that. I have had good sucess on small cranks/Jerks for trout in the stream. I try to fish mine with the current, cast up stream and retrive downstream just a little faster than the current is and they hold better that way.
