New Broadheads

I got a six pack of NAP thunderheads today. I looked at some other brands but, I WILL NOT pay 40 bucks for three broadheads. That is absurd. I guess since Rage is twice as expensive as the Thunderheads or Muzzy, I guess it kills em twice as dead. They may be a good head, but I think what Rage kills best is bank accounts.

I agree $40 is a lot. I spent that per 3 pack on G5 tekans the past 2 years. The 3 deer I killed with them dropped quick. That being said many of the deer I killed with thunderheads, muzzys, spitfires, rocket steelheads, rocket sidewinders, and the others I'm forgetting to mention, gave up the ghost pretty quick, too.

It has been pretty well established that having a broadhead you have confidence in and that shoots properly with your setup is the best choice for you. You spend $600+ on a bow, $50 for sights, $50+ for a rest, $100 for arrows, ect., and spending $10-12 a pop on broadheads is somehow a big deal?

I have taken deer with a number of different heads. I could care less what they cost; as long as they fly true, weigh the same, are sharp, and I have confidence in them then I have no concerns spending $30-40 for 3 broadheads once a year.

I used to use thunderheads for years.I made the switch to g5 montecs for the bear hunt. These heads are awesome they fly great and got super pentrating power. The rage heads got a good idea also but when i fling an arrow at a good buck i want to know it's going to put a hole in him.

So what you are saying is, it's not the broadhead so much as the shooter...

I agree with this statement 100%. But, all else being equal, I'd take the twenty dollar pack over the 40 dollar pack. I might not choose so economically when selecting arrows, a bow or sights. Because, I believe that there may be a difference in quality among these items. The only difference I can see with broadheads (other than mechanicals vs. fixed blades) is some may fly better than others for each archer. If someone said, I chose Tekans over Muzzys because the Tekans shoot better from my bow or I just couldn't get the Muzzys to hit where I wanted them to, THAT I can completely understand. But when you say, I used Tekans and the deer I shot dropped on the spot, or it left a massive blood trail and I found it within 50 yards, that doesn't mean a whole lot to me. That actually tells me more about the shooter than about the broadheads.

Dont be sorry if you found something that works for you. But I think, maybe, you are just a good shot and you could have done that with any broadhead as long as it flew well from your bow. Dont be so quick to credit the equipment, when it might have been the shooter.

you can kill a deer with any field point if the shot placement is good, and thats all on the shooter.

    Yes.

Put any current broadhead in the boiler room, and you've got a dead deer.

Hunting equipment is just like everything else the latest and greatest always cost the most. Then throw in the advertisement and popularity from the hunting shows and you're looking at some $$$. Buy what you can afford and don't loose confidence because you don't have the latest and greatest. Probably more whitetails have been taken with the Bear Razorhead than any other and guys still use them today. Accuracy is far more important than head choice.

Bear Razor heads were the best broad head ever made in my opinion. And no the knockoffs made now are not the same, they don't have the chisel tip. I just wish I could get them to fly right out of my new bow.

You could always go back to "old school" and shoot them out of a long or recurve bow like they were originally designed for. I wish I still had some of my old Bear products. As a kid you always wanted the latest and greatest. It was out with the old and in with the new. Sorry I didn't keep that stuff.

Yep. Killed plenty of deer with the old bear heads back in the day. From those the next step was to razorback 5's. lol.

I hated the razorback 5's. I got REALLY terrible penetration with them.

I didnt have a real problem with penetration, but main reason was because i was shooting in excess of 90 lb. Though i can definately see by their design why they definately wouldnt penetrate equal to other broadheads that were more streamlined. Five blades is just a bit too much surface area. lol.
