mono paraloop mayflies

I received one of Roy Christie's flies in a swap a year or so ago and was blown away
after reading some of hit tutes and recommendations... i decided it was time

I tied this on a larger hook, since it is easier to see

tail fibers and a 12" section of 5# mono



dub a body
the reverse rib with the mono
secure the mono with a few more thread wraps
make sure the mono is not it direct contact with the hook
(the metal to mono contact will burn the mono in later steps)


make a loop off the top of the hook with the mono
secure a few wraps past the loop


add hackle
wrap a few post wraps of the hackle and the loop
notice the mono tag wrapped off the hook bend


dub the head back to the earlier dubbed body
whip finish... done with thread


wrap the hackle around the loop 2 times
then once through the loop
then 3 times around
then 2 times through the loop


slide the hackle down the mono loop


heres the tricky part that takes 2 hands (ie no picture)
pinch the mono right above the hackle with your right hand
then pull the tag end of the mono
this will tighten the loop on to the hackle
press firmly on top of the hackle and give the mono tag another pull
trim the hackle tip and the mono tag





with a sz 16

yeah... he is insane

the flies he sent were 18s and were FLAWLESS... never made the box

though i'll stick to my old way i like to see different ways flies are tied.

I love the way these paras fish, and that the mono loop makes them fun and easy to tie.

I can't say for certain, but for me- When they are tied standard with the para that close to the eye, the eye gets really crowded. Still doable, just easier to tie onto the tippet.

How do they float kev?  they look like they would be low in the water.  the hackle looks sparse, but i guess they stay up pretty good?

Here's a dumb question:  Is it possible to tie some hi-vis material onto the loop prior to cinching it down to make it visible in low light?
