Question for catfish guys

There will be an old farm pond where I am going this weekend. There is definately some big catfish in this thing. Any suggestions on what to use?

I would catch some small blugills & use them ,either live or cut up & change the cut bait every 1'2 hr.By using gills for bait you will eliminate a lot of bites from smaller fish like you would get by using worms & gills are prob. thier basic food in that lake anyways. sam

I have done well on perch heads in the past.  Get a smaller perch cut the head off behind the gills and hook it through the  eyes or how ever you want.

a buddy & I caught 3 channels over 30" at Arthur by using belly strips of perch cut from the fins down to the anal vent. we then drifted them on floating jig heads. sam

If you wanna go the route of cutbait use shad throws out alot more blood and fish oil then a cut up gill. Plus they been spawning where I'm at so it's nothing to get a net scoop for a couple trips...Just Sayin'

Otherwise cheapo hot dogs and your "grocery store" baits, suckers and chubs (live or cut up), float rigs or pin to the bottom.

I also would use cut bait. It works best for me but if you don't want to go that way or use live bait then I go with stink bait or just good old chicken liver.

there are a ton of methods/baits, and that is because aquatic cats don't tend to be fussy like there dry land namesakes!....
My way of dealing with liver is to get fresh tub (I don't like it once it's been frozen because it seems to get mushy). Cut it up at home (where I can actually see what I am doing) into approx 1" chunks, and put it back into its original tub and liberally cover/mix with garlic salt.  I don't know why garlic seems to work but, oh well... the salt does toughen it up as 2B says. I usually salt it a few hours before going fishing, sometimes the night before. Preparing the tub beforehand means that while on the water all you need to do is grab it and hook it, no messing in the dark trying to get it cut.
Nice thing about cutting the small chunks is being able to put 2 or 3 on a hook, after it soaks for a while you can pull one off and replace to freshen it up.
Be warned, night fishing this way can be addictive! Good luck!

Mags, this is a reply I made in a recent thread (thread titled 'chicken livers')
