Somerset Lake

How is this place? I know back in 06 or even 07 they did a major hurting on the lake by putting christmas trees in and something happened and it kinda went dead for a while. Anyone doing any good out there? I'm throwing up a bounch of places in my mind to fish this weekend since it's to be pretty nice. I know what's in there and have read the region report on the fish comm site, but wasn't sure if anyone could give me some "firsthand" insight.

thnx

Idk where you got your info but I always do good at Somerset of course I put in alot of hours on that lake (hell 5 minute drive) for about everything that swims in there.

Yes they did put trees/cribs all other the lake in spots but that didn't last long before they were on the bank, either by guys snagging them and dragging them ashore or washing up.

It looks to me like they are ready to close the road this coming week that runs along the breast of the dam. It was listed in the paper a couple of weeks ago that the road would close soon for bridge work. This weekend the road closed signs are in place but covered up. Coming from 281 n. you will need to run into somerset and get on n. center ave to either one of the roads that will get you past the repairs.

There's one road right after you cross the turnpike bridge on n center and the the other is lake road before tri star motors. For the first time in at least 6 or 7 years wood duck road is also open the whole way through if you want to come in that way from the back side.

I haven't caught any so far this year but I usually catch a couple a year. Forgot about them when the other poster asked what fish are in there.

I don't fish it for muskies but about 3 weeks ago a young fellow I talked to while crappie fishing said he landed a 40 inch one on his ultralight outfit and released it earlier that morning. The bad part is the next day there was a dead 40 inch one floating in the same area. I didn't personally see the landing but I could see a dead fish near shore and fellows I know said they measured the fish and that is what it was.

Yea I wish he had kept it if that's the way it ended up. I have no problem with anyone keeping a legal fish but I'm not sure I'd keep a muskie no matter how large it was unless I knew it was not going to make it. Big ones seem to me to be a treasure. A dang pike I would filet in a minute no matter how big, as long as it was legal. Hate the dang things.

The lake is the same as it's been all week. Visibility of 1 1/2 feet is good for Somerset. Seven or 8 years ago you couldn't tell what kind of fish you had hooked till it was rolling on the surface. Now you can at least get a look at them before they surface. It has been awful slow fishing for me all week after a great day last thursday.

Have been catching a few channel cats while after walleye.

And everyone was looking at me like i was doing something wrong talked to a local said i was the first musky fishermen he has ever seen can't be good.
