Keeping big bass on the hook when they jump

I have hooked into some lunkers recently, and while fighting the large mouth back to the boat they always seem to jump. I have lost a few when they jump and wanted to know if anyone had some good advise for keeping them hooked while jumping.

Give em slack when they jump, dUUd. Not a lot, but when they do that, you lose the cushioning/damping effect of the water. If you're fighting the fish in a typical position, pointing the tip of the rod toward the fish as it jumps should give you the right amount of slack.

Or you can reel them in so fast they hydroplane on the top of the water. Not the most exciting way to fight them but very effective.

The hydroplane method used to be my go to method, then I switched from bass fishing in clubs and small tournements and tried bass fishing with ultra lights and 6 pound test, and thats when I started losing them when they jump. I will prob just go back to heavy polls and straight to the boat no horse play method

Thanks for all the advise - the tip down and even down in the water works great, hooked into my first northeren this past weekend and he came up to jump twice and with the tip down he just surfaced and no jump.

Love it when they break the surface and go airborne, I think it adds to the excitement of the fight... Longer pole with a softer action really works for me. Acts like a shock absorber...
