I'll be going to the salmon river in the morning....I make my own flies and would like to know what to use and fish.   I must admit the first time I tried the river I did a lot of jerking....Want to learn how to fish the river.

    DrBee,

I'll try to be a brief as possible.

For salmon, a floating WF line for a 9 wt. rod, especially with the low water. You can get by with an 8 wt. if you have one.

I tie my own leaders, but if you buy a store bought one, I like the Orvis super strong 7 footer, then cut a foot or so off and and tie on your own tippet, 3- 4 feet of Maxima ultra green works great. Check the DEC regs for your leader length and weight to terminal end, cannot exceed 4 feet(any supplemental weight to fly). Leader cannot exceed 15 feet. Go anywhere from 9 to 12 feet total. If you want to use weight, use the least amount, one small bb and then go from there. Try placing your bb 24-30 inches above your fly. You have to adjust with different depths.

In the low water you probably see your fish first. If so, get upstream of them. Try using dark wet flies, even some with marabou, and cast down and across so the current swings your fly within a foot of the fish. Hold ON. Sometime they will just mouth the marabou and chase or jump at it, so be patient. When you get a hook-up, just raise you rod, do not set the hook.

There are many other techniques, but this is fairly simple, if you can find some open uncrowded water. It is well worth finding uncrowded areas with less fish that have not been beaton on, than crowded pools with tons of fish.

    Good Luck,

So basically no leaders longer then 15 feet. Weight can not be further then 4 feet from the hook. and all flies must have have a swivel attached to it?

I also thought you had to use some sort of swivel? Is that true  like from your leader to your tippet?

A swivel is not mandatory, although many people prefer that method to transition from heavy to light leader.

    fedex,

No swivel needed, like pafisher said some use it. You can use a #12-#14 barrel swivel at the end of your leader and then tie on 3-4 feet of tippet material. This is helpful if you cannot tie a fisherman's knot quickly to attach your tippet lengths or rebuild your leader. The DSR requires a break in your line, a knot is consider a break.

    Tight lines,
