Erie Wave Info

It has been a dozen or so years since I have ventured onto the Big Pond.  Back then, without the internet, we would make the 200 mile one way trip and listen to the TV weather report to get the wave info.

Is there a way to get that info on the net before I leave home -- if it is going to be 4 footers or more, I'm not coming -- bass boats and those types of waves are not fun, if I recall correctly.

I checked most (not all) of the weather and waves links on this site and the only one that gave wave info was the radio boradcast.

Is there another/better source?

I realize that next Wednesday is a long way off weather-wise, but I wanted to start looking now.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

The link on the FishUSA home page will take you to the NOAA page, there are inshore and offshore forcasts. Keep in mind that they are not always real accurate , but if there's a couple days in a row of 2' or less it's usually pretty good.

    Another interesting site: http://www.greatlakesvista.com/

Thanks.  I just found it when you posted.

I am planning on being there Wednesday through Sunday, so as bulldog wrote, if there are 2 - 3 days of 2 feet or less, I am golden.

Of course, there is always the bay.

Watch the actual wind forecasts and you can learn to predict your own wave forecast. Also a wave buoy at dunkirk and a wind tower at Conny, plenty of web resources to know if you can get out or not. Most times if you think you won't be able to get out you won't, but there is always that one time and thats the one everyone remembers and chastizes the NOAA.

I guess I should say that they (NOAA) are as accurate as any weather forcast , seems like last year was a bad year for them though. I will say that I do use and appreciate their services. I just hate driving 2 hours and sitting in a parking lot for 3 or 4 hours then driving back home, or staying home and then hearing about 5' to 7's turning into a flat lake but it happens. I'm just thankful for the days I do get on the lake...

Probly the least acvcurate weather "forecasting", has to be wind & waves for lake Erie.

And IMO, bass boats on the main lake, are never a good idea.

There's been a few times that I wished I had a video camera aboard just to tape those guys with the 20' bass boats and the 250 horse outboards skippin' across the top of 5 footers with little more than the lower unit in the water. Flirting with disaster.... On a good day you could fish the main lake on a pontoon, doesn't mean you should do it though.

Back in the day I fished it all the time in a bass boat.  Never really had a problem.  Maybe because I don't go out when it is bad and get in as soon as it starts to think about it.

If I can't get out I sit at camp and drink.   Stop down and say Hi. Although there are plenty O days that we go out that maybe we shouldnt. As long as no storms forecasted and an experienced crew we may push it at times.

I pay absolutely no attention to NOAA.  For a lack of better words...they suck.
None of them are ever right but I use weather.com daily for their wind forecasts.  Most of time they are pretty reliable.  I also depend on their radar, especially on the lake.
Doesn't look good until Tuesday.  We will see...

I agree with the consensus here...NOAA blows..When they forecast 2ft or less it's 3's and 4's and when they forecast 3-5's it's 5-7's or 2ft or less. Never know...I would do as others have stated and watch the wind and direction.  There are a lot of buoys and wind stations that have up to the minute info. You learn to get a feel for what you are in for. For instance a south wind 15-20mph, depends on how deep you are going, but up to 3-4 miles offshore should be ok, might start to get a little bumpy at the edges. Out deep probably looking at 2-4's. If it says NE.....anything over 15mph is not a fun ride anywhere..

We always used buoyweather.com for gulf of mexico reports.  They were a little more reliable than NOAA but it was still a crap shoot.

I would try www.yourerie.com, that is our local weather from Channel 24 News. They are usually pretty good.

For every 5kt wind add 1ft in wave height. Offshore is a whole lot different then the inshore

    Thanks everybody.

This is a lot of good information.

Basically, if the weather holds out, we would be launching out of Northeast and running less than 3 - 4 miles back towards the bay and will be well within 2 miles of shore.

I use surfing sites for lake michigan wind direction. The whole lake is plotted. Not sure if lake erie has one ?
