Reel Seat Wood

I cut down 2 - 8" diameter Chestnuts that were getting sqeezed out by some larger trees over the weekend. I cut the stump out by digging down below the dirt a few inches and cutting, then filled over the rest with dirt. I have a few chunks of the base saved as I thought someone (Skip) may like to turn a reel seat insert. Does anyone have any experience with Chestnut? Its hard as hell as I burnt a new chain cutting them out.

Dude! That stuff is excellent , but can splinter if not treated right. If you have a BIG root I'd section saw it and look for burl or other figuring and then let it dry for about a year in a cool dry spot (no heat). That will sabilize the wood. If oil treated it gets very nice and reddish. throw in some burl or some fishscale in the grain and it is beautiful!

I'm gonna cut it into a few even blocks and dry it out for awhile. Im not sure if there is any figuring in the grain, we'll see. Skip, if it looks nice I'll save a chunk for you.

Jay, look for limb **** wood cut on the bias too. Gives a nice curly grain pattern, sometimes even curly.
