Fishing in Belize

Anyone ever been to Belize? My daughter is over in Afganistan working for the USO. She has some leave time she needs to take and asked me to meet her in Belize for a week in mid-May. Does anyone have any guides or trips they could recommend for this area? I'm planning on spending at least one day fly fishing the flats for tarpon and bone fish and at least one day deep sea fishing weather permitting. I have never done either of these but have dreamed about it for years. Any advice would be greatly apprecaited.

My neice went there on her honeymoon.  Both her and her husband came back with some sort of insect that bores into/under your skin.  They had some lumps that would not go away.  She had to have two cut out of her head.  Pretty serious bugs down that way.  I am sure the fishing is great if you can catch on and match it.

I have fished there twice. Both were cruise stops that I arranged for myself and not through the cruise line.

First time we flew from Belize City to Ambegris Caye.  Hooked up with a guide from Ruby's Hotel (arranged well before the trip) named Vincent.  He was a great guy.  I had tarpon on the brain and even though he suggested bonefish, I insisted.  I wished I had listened to him.  The area that we went to for tarpon was wat too wind blown that particular day.  The wave action, although small, had the sand so churned up that you couldn't see the bottom in waist deep water.  So spotting a crusing tarpon wasn't going to happen.  If we had fished for bones, we could have stayed near the Caye and fished protected areas.

Teh second trip I fished with a guide out of the world famous Belize River Lodge.  His name was Nato and was either the first or second worst guide I have had anywhere in the world.  Again, the wind was a factor and we could not reach any of the Turneffe flats in the panga from Belize City.  He decided that we would fish the Belize River.  Of course he didn't have the right gear to fisah the river with him, so we had to stop by the lodge to get different fly rods.  He put-puted up the river like we wereon a sightseeing tour. This cut a short trip even shorter.  When we did finally hit the river, whihc had osme decent current going, he never used the push pole to position the boat.  He would just drift thorugh an area and hope that you made the cast.  We did see two schools of baby tarpon, but he refused to go after them as they fed in an outside bend.

So neither experience was great for me.

Ambergris Key. Bonefish until your arm is sore, maybe a permit or two. There's also the biggest barrier reef this side of Australia. I don't know who guides on it, when I dove on it a few times I saw more huge grouper than ever made the fishing mags, and a long list of trophy gamefish. Belizans are very protective of their enviroment, but also great about putting you on world class fishing. Also nice, Buck a beer at beachfront bars.
