smallies

looking to make a trip from washington pa this year to catch some smallies in the tribs but not real sure on the time period to when i should come up and give it a shot i know they start going in now and stay for a while the next two weekends i got work but after that i'd like to make the trip on a saturday is that a good time for them, any thoughts or tips appreciated.

    I like the beginning of may for smallies in the streams. I usually fish them on the eastide tribs never hit elk or walnut for em though. I've caught smallies in the streams or at the mouth as late as the beginning of july.

    i have never fished the east side tribs before but if there are more smallies in them than in elk and walnut thats where im going ill just have to explore a little bit and see what i can find, heard smallies in there are pretty big and put up a great fight

    They fight good but I think there are more numbers of fish on the west side

    sweet.. is it better to stay closer to the mouth or should i explore further up in the tribs?

    I only have experience on the east side but closer to the lake for sure.

    they are starting to come in slowly.. right now you can catch them off the mouths and shorelines near the mouths.

    next month they should start to heat up...

    crawlers, leeches and crawdads seem to work best on the live-bait side.. (minnies too)

    Is all the ice off lake Erie? Best time to fish for small mouth, and approx time spon starts. Need info please. Traveling 450 miles to fish.

    Smallies can be very abundant in Elk.  I remember fishing it last year at the boat launch and getting into double digit numbers near the end of April.  Fished it again a week later at the Legion and there were a bunch in that area.  I was using clousers each time and they were very productive.  Find the creek levels just right and the fishing can be awesome, a little low and clear and they can get spooky.

    Thanks Ironhed for the information. My budd and I usually fish from 6th st ramp up to the cribs. Have had some great catches there. Biggest smallie 6 1/2 Lbs. KYcat
