The Crease??

Speaking to some guys at length this weekend on the river. We were comparing the appearence of the dropbacks as opposed to fresh fish. Now there is no mistaking a real chromer fresh out of the lake. But to tell the difference between a brightening dropback and a bright fish that entered the river in the last week or two???? One guy was talking about a crease a drop back has??? I have seen spawned out females with red along the area of thier vent. But what was he talking about with mention of a crease?

Anybody know?

Usually a quick look at the belly will tell you a lot on a silver fish in the spring and appearance of scars, fins missing, or other marks that are signs of a dropback fish running back to the lake, or lack thereof. If the belly is full a female will have eggs and a male will have sperm sacks in prep for a spring spawn. If it's thin and the bottom of the fish is flat (you can see a straight line from tail to head on the belly side) it's probably a spawned out fish heading back to the lake.

Even on a dropback fish that is turning silver you may be able to locate a patch of dark skin or a small area of spots. That would also probably mean dropback.

Sometimes the fight will tell you also. Usually fresh chromers will give you more of a battle than a spawned out fish heading back to the lake.

Are there exceptions and more scientific ways to tell? Yep. In the end all of them are fun!

    Nea,
I'm not sure of a crease but I'll share with ya something that my mentor taught me.  He is from the Pacific Northwest.

    For what it's worth...
See the iridescent rays in the center of the tail in the photo above?
He told me these(colorful rays) will only be visible 24-48 hours after a fish enters it's spawning tribs.  After that time period they will disappear.
With that info, I started paying attention to our Great Lakes mutts(and salmon) and it seems to hold true here also.

Also, and I may be wrong but a fresh-run fish will have scales where a dropback will have absorbed their scales come spawning time.
Don't hold me to that though...

Yeah, I was thinking it was another "steelhead myth".

Thanks for the input good and bad.

Ironhed, that is something that appears very logical and likely I did not know, thanks

Many times a fish that has been in the creeks all winter has used up a large amount of it's fat supplies due to the fact that there is nothing for them to eat in the tribs. When the fat reserves disappear the fish will appear skinny and sometimes have a crease on their belly from where the fat has disappeared. Ever lose a lot of weight? Same thing.

A good way to tell is as mentioned above a saggy belly. In addition to that about 9 out of 10 fish are gonna have battle scares ie torn up fins from spawning and ice flow wounds that are starting to heal. Dropbacks are generally easy to spot at a glance.

The power of the fight is not a very good way to tell as I had a fish come out of the water eye level and continue to go airborne 3-4 more times before he was to hand. (This past sunday mind you)

This is not a dropback, but does have a rather large red area coming out the vent. Probably due to the volume and pressure of the eggs getting ready to come out.

I heard the same thing about the crease. Loss of body mass...
