Oil Creek Desiel Spill

Another poster put this link up on the Oil Creek outing thread. I thought it a pretty relevant piece of info...and thought I'd pass it on.

What a shame!

This may ruin the fishing a bit but the rest of the outing will be just as enjoyable. I hope the damage is minimal to the environment.

I think the spill is downstream of the Petroleum center area..
Still a hard blow to the environment..

The spill was downstream of Petroleum Center. It was right in the area of the bridge on Rt 8 that crosses Oil Creek, North of Rouseville.

From hearing talk in this area, sounds like alot of the diesel made it to the creek. The only thing that may have helped was that the creek is still flowing pretty good from snow melt and rain.

No doubt it made it to the Allegheny also.

Also sounds like the driver was trapped in the cab for over 2 hours.

Never fished Oil Crk but a buddy of mine and I were planning on possibly hitting it this weekend. Im not sure of the locations, so will this spill effect the Delayed Harvest Fishing areas in this creek? Thanks in advance.

It will not.  Keep in mind there are two delayed harvests on Oil.  One is in Titusville at Drake's Well and the other at Petroleum Center.  The spill happened at the Rt. 8 bridge near Oil City.

It's sad but ironic that it's named Oil Creek. I found out first hand the hard way about another stream,
Slippery Rock Creek. Back in my college days I fell crossing it and separated my shoulder. Verrry slippery!

Slight correction to my post. The crash happened a little North of the park entrance, near the intersection of Rynd Hill Rd and SR 8. The diesel spilled into a small tributary (Cherry Run) of Oil Creek, then made it's way to Oil Creek and the Allegheny.
According to the Derrick, the DEP feels that environmental impact will be minimal due to diesel being a light substance (it floats on water) and high water conditions. People as far South as Kennerdell on the Allegheny had already resported seeing slicks pass by yesterday.
    Containment and clean up continues.
The driver had to be extricated and was flown to UPMC Presby, listed in serious condition.
The tank trailer actually split in half and caught fire. The back 1/2 of the trailer ended up in the creek. Fortunately, the first arriving fire crews extinguished the fire before it reached the driver.

Thanks Eric on the update. Good news for the people heading to Oil for the get together.
    Hopefully the impact is minimal.

lol.. that is ironic. I guess they got their names for some reason or another.

That REALLY sux about the creek, hopefully there will not be too much damage..

7,000 gallons seems like an awful lot of fuel. I wonder if anything is floating belly up yet...

    sucks..

If the fish can survive in OIL creek, what's a little Diesel fuel gonna hurt? Have you ever tasted the water? It's like drinking 10W 40. At least it was back in the 80's. Maybe things have changed.

From rt 8 up stream is the most fished areas . All is fine there . Have not seen any effects down stream , yet but it is beening watched closly . The clean up went well the booms are still in place to catch and more seeping fuel from the site . It will take years for the area to recover but the good side was it was a small area that took the worst of it .

Just be thankful that the oil creek spill did not share the same fate as this one:
