Little buggers in bright colors. Flash is usually a safe bet.

I plan to target crappie with woven body buggers this year after seeing them in the water last fall and noting that they manage to get alot of motion and volume in the water, but very little bulk, so you've got a big hook gap for a secure hookup on a crappie.

for bluegills we've always crushed them on royal coachman wet flies. i dont have much experience with crappies, but most smaller minnow immitations should suffice.

white woolly buggers for crappies. they'll take them on the way down so try to keep the line tight and watch for a sudden movement on the line as the fly falls.

i've caught gills on smaller woolly worms and buggers but i still like hooken on small poppers or dry terrestrials.

For gills, I also use a small (#14) black & green woven micro chenille nymph. Similar to a **** creek nymph but smaller, green instead of orange, no rubber legs, and flash. On a small pond I hit regularly, it isn't uncommon to get a gill on every single cast for 20-30 minutes at a time with that fly. Another advantage to it is that it is very very durable, so you can grab it with hemos without damaging it if a gill drinks it deep.

kyler, you could probably get a similar effect just tying in the 2 strands and winding them around the shank at the same time for a striped effect, as opposed to the top/bottom effect of the woven nymphs.

For gills I use a parachute caddis tied using a couple strands of crystal flash wrapped with peacock herl. Green and red breasted sun fish love them too.

A little twitch as they are inspecting it gets them every time.

My own observations lead me to believe that bluegills like practically any wet, nymph or small streamer, but they are really attracted to anything with shortish rubber legs, for some reason. One of my favorites are 'Madame X' flies fished like wets. You can start fishing them like dries, however.

For gills I use a very easy but effective deer hair beetle sz 14-18. Just tie a small clump in at the bend like a tail, and fold over tie-in point and tie down and finish at eye. For crap, always had luck stripping wet flies like wolly worms.

I tied a bunch of Orange sponge beetles with barred rubber legs and accidentally mismatched to the hook. They float for a few moments but then sink. I was amazed at how the fish, including Crappies, liked them even when fished down low.

I like to use a green foam beetle with white rubber legs when the crappie's are shallow in the spring. Gill's will hit them to. I also like to use little cork or balsa poppers with rubber legs. Sure can be fun.
