Rhea feathers

You swinging guys out there, I was wondering if $10 would be a good price for a nice rhea feather? The guy said they are pure white feathers and then dyed. He has several colors also. Would black and violet be good colors to start tying mini-truders with or should I get a black and then yellow for swinging for browns.

    depends on the feather
is this the guy from speypages?

for a "start at tying mini-truders".... buy some ostrich and some type of "spey hackle"

I saw that on speypages and wanted no part of it. Sure 10 bucks now but the price will go up after that. Rhea is cool but its pricey. If you ask me about colors my answer may forever be, pink and orange. Should have some black as well. Check out Irish Angler for your west coast style flies. Sandy is great to talk with and she'll tell you straight. Thats where I get mine for now. But may have another source in the works.

Yeah it is the guy from speypages. Does Sandy sell the small shanks and ostrich? Should I look for mini ostrich? The guy from spey pages sent me some other pictures and they look like they are good quality from what I can tell.

I have never used the mini stuff. I have seen it before in the shops but never thought of picking any up. I got an orange ostrich plume from Sandy that measures in at 22" of fibers in the 3.5"-5.5" range. For 10 bucks I think its worth it. I think I'm going to give her a call here pretty soon. I am sure you are going to pick up some rhea feathers. This is the style fly that almost everybody uses rhea for.

Which is cool. I use it that way as well. But you can also use it as a hackle on your speys. Like this

Same fly different lighting. Cool shot I think.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. On a side note. KJ, all my streams should be 100% open by tomorrow. Too bad they will all be the color of coffee. Should be in full swing within 14 days.

    lost the teardrop

look at the fly at 5'oclock
rhea got tangeled in the stinger

I dont see a problem with him until I get a quote for shipping, if anything is going to be fishy it will be getting a quote from BC to Erie cheaply and in a timely manner. Ill probably just send Sandy an email. I need shanks and ostrich/rhea and maybe amhearst. Going to get the newer RIO short skagit 275  20' head and dont know what else to put on that. Probably a 5 or 7.5 cheater and 7 foot t8 sink tip and a floating tip also. Going to fish the bay with this setup too. I should get some nice distance from that. Do either one of you have skagit master? If so shoot me a PM.

KJ - those last two pics really give's a good perspective on how they swim. Thanks.

Yeah HC, I got that video. Its not mine but I got it. Really wish the owner of the video would send me his address or come up and fish with me. We are having a spey/switch get together here in OH. The link is pretty cheezy but it will be a great get together. http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/yhst-36139619315320_2095_32867966 I know who one of the guests is going to be and you dont want to miss him. I was lucky enough to fish with him once before when he was in town. The guy is the man. KJ I dont know why you got all tangled. I had that happen to one of my flies once. I just cut the tangle and kept fishing it. I havent had that happen since. I dont know why? Just lucky I guess. On all my stinger hooks I coat the backing/braid/ whatever I use with flexement. Maybe I didnt do that one? Maybe that has something to do with it?

i would be curious as to what made you choose that line pairing... i think you may have some issues
    what rod?

If you are fishing still water, look to an overhead line
overheading skagit is not very productive

i have a skagitmaster that is currently on vacation on OH

i will be in Canada that week

i think i went too long... too long on the rhea and too long on the stinger hook
I cut the tangled section and kept fishing

Its for my beulah 4/5 I forgot to say I have a scandi line that works well and would be used for touch and go single speys and overhead for still water. KJH I sent you a PM earlier. The grain window I found for my rod is 250-350ish and the 275 is the lightest skagit I could find.

what sparked the idea of cheaters???

with a 20' short skagit 275g.. if you add a 5-7' cheater, you are at a full skagit line at ~325g (at least)

I need the length to get within my 3-3.5 range. I don't need a 10-14ft sink tip for Erie. 7 would be a good length for everything in the area and could be used for stillwater nicely too. Unless there are some poly leaders I could use, but I didnt think that was good for skagit.
