I have a 6" Morra that I have had for ever (over 30 years), it’s a great auger. A couple things to consider… a hand powered auger is light weight and with sharp blades makes short work of drilling your holes as long as you are in 4" to 12" ice or so, a 5" or 6" size is all you need… I once caught a 16 lb. carp through the ice and got him out through a 6" hole (he snagged himself while I was fishing in 3 ½’ of water). One with a folding handle is handy for storage and transporting in smaller vehicles. A gas powered auger will of course do better in thicker ice and is handy if you are drilling a lot of holes… but they are noisy, heavy and more expensive (and not as environmentally friendly). So I guess you can see which I prefer.

So when u punch holes for your friend, it helps to fish quicker than be exhausted by the time you go to punch your own holes. Plus 1 of the next best thing I ever bought next to my poles & electronics.

I've used a Mora Strikemaster for over 30 years 8 inch, the key thing is sharp blades, every 2-3 years I put new blades on,under 10 inches of ice no problem, and I punch a lot of holes.

Hence the words "Just messing with you!"...but since you insist, you didn't say gas augers were "environmentally unsafe" (I'm not sure how they would be anyway, unless you're talking about the exhaust, in which case it must be a real **** hauling your ice gear on a bicycle ), you stated they scared fish...(not sure how they'd scare fish more than an electric power auger), and they were for lazy people (how is this more so for gas power augers than electric power augers?)...btw, I thought power augers were for lazy people too...until I bought one! Now, I'm lazy I guess, but am also a more productive mobile icefisherman.

thanks guys, picked up a 8 inch hand auger at cabelas. tried it out on pond and it worked great. headed to erie on monday for a 3 day ice adventure. might even try the bay, its hard for me to get excited about bluegills or perch though. I'm into big fish that fight.
