Salmon River Report DSR 9-20-07-Fishon!

Holly Salmon is all I can say. Myself, scudbug and TB went for a ironman trip to the Salmon River in Pulaski, NY. Conditions were forecasted as  being bad for fishing (low flow, sunny and warm). We arrived at the DSR and the conditions were as described. We immediately thought we'd be in for a slow day. We could not have been more wrong. At 9:30am all hell broke loose and we watch 100's of coho and king salmon run up river. I estimate between 9:30 am and 2pm we saw anywhere from 500-800 fish atleast. We ended up hooking up with over 150 fish between the three of us. We landed approxiately 50% of them. Most averaged between 10-25 pounds. Hot flies were Woooly buggers, estaz eggs. I fell bad because one of our cohorts T*****-T** was stuck at work riding his gov't desk. I spoke to several old Salmon River salts and they all said this was the best day on the Salmon River in 17 years. Man did we hit it good!

Glad you hit it good, but I'm having a hard time swallowing that a sportsman fishing wolly buggers and estaz flies would have a box of dead fish as his ID picture...especially if they are of the variety of your screen name.  Sorry, but imo that's poor taste, dude. Just my take...but again, glad the fishing seems to have picked up.

Up north, my picture is the smoke box at poor richards. In my life I have caught many steelhead an have never kept a one. I don't support keeping any steelhead. It's a joke that you can keep 3 even. I hate the fact that people profit on them. IMHO I believe that the smoking operation makes it too easy for people to keep them. Sorry I don't have some dumb picture of a chick holding a steelie in a bikini. Fishing was great.

It is too bad people can't see the sarcasm in your efforts Catching Chrome.  I think the fact that we caught over 100 salmon yesterday and never kept one is a testiment.  And they are going to die anyway...

It was good!  We were fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time.  It was funny to walk into some Pulaski fly shops afterwards and hear them giving advice which was so far off of what we saw...

Fished the upper end of the river on 9-16-07 and there were not to many fish to be found anywhere. You really had to work to get any fish. We went to the estuary and there were quite a few fish and also quite a few rippers. Do you know if the fish are still down at the estuary as well.

    Hot Tuna,
We caught a mix of Kings and Cohos. I had my 30# boca grip and of about 20 or so we weighed that was the average. I am sure we had some smaller but they seemed to be all the same size. The fishing really was intense I'd say between 10am and 1 pm at any given time I could see atleast 10-30 fish infront of me. As for keeping my catch, I almost never keep one. The pic is of fish to be smoked at PR's I disagree that they will sell the service of smoking with exchange. It just rubs me the wrong way.

As TB pointed out, sorry I didn't pick up the sarcasm in your photo...should have...I'm one of the most sarcastic blokes you will ever meet. Anyway, no offense intended...just me bustin' balls. I do that now and again just to stay amused. Thanks for the report. And we share the same views on C&R. No problem with the occassional fish kept (I do it too w/ salmon only) and Tuna is right. If the rules are followed, let it be. Sometimes the rules suck, especially if they are not made in the best spirit of the resource.

    Salmo and Tuna -
Lurking a little, not much. I've got the bug pretty bad as I always do this time of year. Plans are still in tact for next week, arriving late Mon 10/1 and staying through the week. Bummin' about the water, but we take what's given and make the most of it. We will be tying in some wing shooting on this trip as well and are quite psyched about it. Let's see about sharing some stories and beers next week. Let me know your schedule...send me private email addresses to do it off-line. Tuna, do you still have mine?

I yearn to be the tail of that dolphin. Wow.

    Good fishing.
