Craveman welcome to the board... how far west is that, near Utica?  Don't get out that way much because of all the choices closer by.

    My favorite bait shop:
    CONROYS- watervliet

the Flying Arrow in good ol East Greenbush. Jimmy is the name of the owner and he is a great guy. Catch him when hes not busy and you always get plenty of bait for a great price.

Fish 307 has good lively bait and its very very conveniant for me sometimes but their prices are steep. Fort Anne right behind those outlet shops.

I second that that yank, conroys is my personal favorite local bait shop any day.

Ya know, I've heard some good things about flying arrow, but I have a problem with that place. My buddy needed a new string for his bow, so I told him to go over there (my archery shop is in Cobleskill, he didn't want to go that far)

Drops his bow off, says "just need a new string"

His dad picks it up for him, gives him the bill - $236.50!! All they did was change the string, they never even tightend the modules on the cams, when he went to shoot the bow, it rattled like a baby rattler! Ridiculous!!

--sorry, just had to get that off my chest--

I had a similar experience...... and have heard of issues with bait that died way too quickly  ... and they are full of sh.. as far as the stories they tell of what has been caught and on what lure.

But.... what bait shop doesn't bs a little?

Sounds like I am in full agreement with pretty much everyone.

I always love any bait shop staffed by a gentle old man.  Especially if I have a full cup of coffee and some time to kill.

So for that reason alone, I would have to choose "Conroys" as my favorite.  But having said that, Flying Arrow is closer to my house so I do buy some gear there on occassion.  The funny thing is that they are BOTH apparently pretty overpriced, since I noticed prices are actually CHEAPER up in Chestertown where I usually gripe about inflated costs.

If I have the time, I'd rather give my money to old man Conroy and hear some semi-reliable local reports.

If I am in a rush, I will head to Flying Arrow and hear tales of BS about what an amazing fishery Snyders Lake is.

But if I am heading north for a daytrip or weekend, I will ALWAYS hold off on bait and gear until we hit Crossroads up in Chestertown.  I've been going there forever, and they always have good coffee, frisy bait, and nice folks.

(Even if they do bust your chops a little for being the first idiots buying bait for ice fishing)

Do not forget Saratoga Bait and Tackle just over the bridge (9P) on Saratoga Lake.  Tim, Nick and Rose are great people and they will point you in the right direction for ice fishing if you mention Eagle Ed.  I get nothing in return, but you cannot beat their fresh bait and timely information on where to fish and for which species.
Lake Lonely Livery (Crescent Avenue) is still up in the air about whether or not they will be open this Winter.  Last time I spoke with the owner (Bill Perry) he was not sure what he was going to do this winter.  Always had fresh bait and good prices.

ahh yes, Saratoga Tackle and Lake Lonely.

Billy at LL is a good guy with fair prices and always knows the hot spot.

Tim at 'toga tackle has a heck of a selection of jigs and lures.

I used to work at both those places when they were both owned by Tim. I ran Lake Lonely for a summer ('04), it was fun!

Also, don't forget about Hanks Bait and Tackle on Rt 9 just south of Round Lake. The guy also cuts up deer and sells fire wood. I'm headed over there in a few mins to pick up my deer actually

'Nother bait shop is Wiggly worm on rt 50 in Burnt Hills.

Also, don't forget about Hanks Bait and Tackle on Rt 9 just south of Round Lake. The guy also cuts up deer and sells fire wood. I'm headed over there in a few mins to pick up my deer actually

Although I'm not a seasoned vet in upstate NY, I have been to many of the places listed above (besides Jeff's comprehensive list). My personal experience is that if you're going for live bait, and live bait only, Hanks on Rt 9 is the best. He may seem a little cranky at times, but his bait is top notch, and I always get at least double or triple for what I ask for. If it wasn't for the 7 day law with a receipt, I'd rarely have to go to the bait shop.

When hell freezes over, I'll fish there too.

Just a heads up guys. I was heading out Rte 85 the other day and noticed that Flying Arrow Sports in no longer there. Not sure if they moved, but I did not notice any signage or anything on the building where they used to be. Poor economy and location might have wiped them out already.

Schroon Lake Sunoco now has live bait and fishing supplies. They are open 5am til 10pm everyday. Off of Exit 28 on Rte 9. Nice to have a place to get bait in Schroon Lake again.

If you are headed towards Thompsons or Warners or any of the Partridge Run "ponds" , even Crystal, Myosotis, or Triangle. . . Helderberg Mountain Lures is your best bet. Richie runs a nice little shop and is reliable. Has good prices as well. Also I'll try to get the Thompsons Lake Campground opened up a little earlier for you guys, sorry but my shift starts at 7:00, can't rush a state "employee".

Stress is just one hookset away from being gone.

Sunoco station on Route 30A (just past Route 347 heading West on left side of 30A) in Mayfield has great bait and very reasonable prices.  Got pike minnows for $6 a dozen and they are good size minnows.

As soon as we get our butt out there to open it. Generally about 7:30. Been making it a habit to have the guys open that gate before any others so you can get out there.

Helderberg Mountain Lures is good and close to my house, the owner Rich likes to talk.

Really dont like Flying Arrow on RT 85 in Slingerlands. The guy who owns the building (not the owner of flying arrow) is always in there pretending he is a sales men and trying to push stuff down your throat. Also know some guys who have has problems with bows that were bought there and had problems with them fixing it.
