It has hit our property and out neighbors on the Greene/Washington border.  The stench is bad in the valleys at night.  The official numbers are in the hundreds but I will say that the real numbers will be in the thousands.

We estimate about a 25% to 50% loss on our local herd based on a few spotting trips.  There are carcasses scattered throughout the area.  It did not discriminate either.  Nice bucks, does and fawns.

What a shame as our group and the property owners around us try to manage our herd a little.  Alot of hard work down the tubes.

It has hit Greene hard.  Washington, Allegheny, Beaver as well.

    Gents,

I live in East Finley Township, Washington County and yes the reports are true. In certain areas the stench of dead deer is overwhelming, honestly you can't drive with the car windows down.

    Take care

That is sad news to hear but at least it can't be transmitted by deer-to-deer contact.

The PGC is finally acknowleding the scope of this outbreak in thier new press release.  As I said before the kill will be in the thousands when this is over.

Our area is pretty much wiped out.  Good thing I have a few backup spots to rely on that have not been hit with this yet.

Unfortunately, this is one of the results of having too many deer concentrated in certain areas.  Makes it easier for the midges to spread from deer to deer and infect more.  Lets just hope for an early frost (I don't really want one because I like fresh garden tomatoes and fresh salsa into mid October) but I'll give that up to help some deer out and hopefully some fellow hunter's property.

I have a question how did this virus start and how did it only hit washington and greene co?????

It is a rather common virus that hits deer in the south.  The bugs that carry this virus survive only in warm climates.  Occasionally in the summer they make thier way into the northern states.

There have been scattered ourbreaks in many states this year in the north.

There has been speculation about the origin of the outbreak in Greene county since the same area was the origin in 2002.  Some believe the midges are being transported from the south to certain coal mines in the area on railcars and belts for the mine and it spreads from there. Hard to prove though.

So far the deer here in eastern Washington County seem to be fine, not a dead 1 in sight and i have not smelled any, with the exception of 1 while fishing at the 84 mine prep plant dam a couple of nights ago but it may have been hit by a car because there is a road close by, but i have been in many different woods around scouting for archery an my area seems clean so far, the Observer Reporter mentioned something a few weeks ago, i can't remember it to well but most of the dead deer in Greene County seem to be around Bailey Mine if i remember correctly, maybe the mines do have something to do with this, according to Dale Lolley in todays Observer Reporter, State Sen. Richard Kasinic of Uniontown has sent a letter to the game commision stating they should discontinue antlerless license sales because of this outbreak in WMU 2a, and is concerned about what will happen if we kill an extra 20-30 thousand deer will have on the deer population that has already been heavily impacted by EHD ( real name is = Epizooitic Hemmorrhagic Disease). Dale Lolley also states that WMU's 2b and 2c have also started to see affected deer and says to really think about using your extra tags. George Block says in his article while talking to PGC officer, confirmed that the disease has been spotted in Jefferson Hills and says that a good early frost could wipe out a significant amount of the disease. This is something serious that we all should think about now and in the future and the paper also says that it is affecting cattle in Ohio. I guess were just gonna have to hope for the best this season.

Yet another politician that knows nothing about deer management making statements with no biology to back it up.

Yes this disease has killed 1-2 thousand deer.  Our area was hit hard especially in wetern Greene.

1-2 thousand deer are insignificant to this unit as a whole.  Most of this unit (2A) is still above recommended carrying capacity and hunters should use thier tags if thier areas have not been effected, which is the majority of the unit.

I'll hunt in West Greene anyway.  Hopefully, the doe I shoot will not be the last one alive in 2A.
