answer question please???

I will be going to 16 mile/20 mile fly fishing next week with my brother for the first time ever. I read from the fishing reports about 'going upstream'to some of the big holes. Now, from where I am in Pennsylvania, and South of Lake Erie, upstream to me would be toward the lake. If you want a good laugh, answer my dumb question. Is it south toward me, into the tributaries, OR is it toward the lake? Like I said, I'm not a true fisher(woman), but I would like to know so I at least appear to know what I'm doing, or where I'm going... Thanks

Upstream = against the flow of water. You'll find out quick.

so, I get it. But does the water flow from the lake to the tributaries, or from the tributaries to the lake....

I'll definitely go against the flow.

No ,no get to the heights near I-90 and roll down the hill, Northwards and you'll be following the tribs, as they flow from the weary lake effect lands near waterford, to the big lake.

Are you oriented yet? Grab your map and dip the North end Down (towards the ground) if it helps.

Also keep in mind, the fish don't care which way is North.  all they care is that they get to the upper reaches of the stream in the latewinter/early spring.

maps are only for driving directions.

oh no, don't do that all the water will dump out of the streams and  into the lake and the fish won't have anything to swim in!

tilt the south end down, we can use a little more water in the cricks.

I'm not joking. I have no idea how the water flows up there. It is logical that it would flow downhill, but then who knows what is downhill when we are south of you.

Uphill and downhill geographically have no bearing on north and south.  People from pgh go "up" to the mountains in Somerset yet Somerset is south of pgh.

Patty, the water flows from the streams/tribs into the lake, the steelhead 'run' from the lake into the steams, going upstream. I've had the same discussion with my wife, never wanting to go fishing, but she does once in awhile ask questions. She has her 'hobbies' and I have my obsessions!

You all have been great in trying to orientate me. I have printed off some of the maps and will hopefully have a good fishing experience. My brothers and one son love to fish and I do pretty good from the boats, but the only catch from a stream has been several bushes and trees. Still learning! Thanks for all your input.
