loud clicking

i have an older orvis spring and pawl reel (it was a madison entry level) that seems like a nice reel, but as you wind line back on to the reel, the clicking is annoyingly loud.  is there any way to make it less noisy?  thanks.  rap

Can't you bend the spring a little, so there is less pressure on the pawl?

the reel is at least 20 years old and like new.  not expensive, but sentimental.  had it singing on a carp this past summer.  i swear my stihl chain saw is quieter.  i will get used to it if i use it again.  thanks, guys.

    Rap,
Is this a single pawl type reel?
The loud click is there to announce "Fish On" So you don't have to.
Thick grease might deaden the sound a bit.
Hardy used to build reels for Orvis. I once ran into a PDF file that showed how to adjust the spring.
Or, take it steelhead fishing and let the fish wear down the pawl.
Or, take a file to the pawl.
