Waxy

Through the years, I grew tired of watching the anglers throwing waxworms catch all the fish (in the winter) so I came up with an alternative. They dont stink but they catch fish from time to time.

    thanks.

Wrap .020 lead wire around the shank leaving the front third of the hook open. Wrap a thread base, trying to even out the lead/shank junctions.

The next part can be a little tricky. Take a needle point debarb plier and bend Japanese nymph legs into a U shape to create the 3 sets of legs. Tie in the first set (criss-cross wrap) where the wire ends 1/3rd of the way back from the hook eye. Then, secure the 2nd and 3rd set of legs in front of that. Superglue them in place.

Now, advance the thread to the rear of the hook and secure a strip of Virtual Nymph Skin (cream). Wrap it forward. This can be tricky to because you want to gauge your wraps so they the front 3 wraps cover the 3 sets of legs. Tie the Nymph Skin off. Mark the head, legs, and body to the desired colors (I use dark brown for the head, legs, and rear end; pale yellow for the body and mustard for the darker plates on the back, then blend the colors).

Next, varnish over the entire grub. Let dry re-paint. Softex the entire thing. Then re-paint. Wallah!

DHise - Tried tying these but I'm having a bit of trouble when the nymph skin covers the Japanese nymph legs. It wants to flatten or collapse them to the body instead of "punching out" into the skin. I don't think there are different thicknesses of Japanese legs but apparently you must be using a thicker material than I am. Correct me if I'm wrong. I use these legs in combination with porcupine quills to make realistic legs on nymphs. First time I've seen them used this way. Just can't seem to get them to punch out into the skin without them flattening out. Perhaps a picture tutorial?

It takes some practice. Im using the standard Jap nymph legs. Ive tyed hundreds, if not thousands, so Ive had a little practice. The technique is something I developed through the years. Keep trying.

DHise, great stuff man i'd like one for a hat pin
i'm sure they'll catch fish. i'm down to the basic easy tying patterns or i'd give it a try. i still do well with a fat latex caddis or swannadaze maggot with a tail when i want to imitate wax worms or maggots. still nice work and thanx for posting. ~dt
