Buck down!!

And one heck of a story. This stuff only happens in the movies but here goes.

Hunting last night and after seeing some does and a 4 point move through, here comes one of the bucks I have been watching all summer towards me at last light. At 30 yards I stop him with a grunt and and let fly a G5 Striker tipped Gold Tip from my new Excaliber. He jumps and off he goes. After about 15 minutes off calming my nerves, I climb down and begin to look for my arrow. Nothing!! Start walking along the trail he took and nothing. With it being dark now and no sign I made the decision to back out and start my search in the morning.

Before I headed out I checked in on the computer and saw a thread on another message board about a 8 point that dies in a parking lot in the area I hunt and the PGC was called and the buck picked up I said it can't be true. I called the PGC and told them the story and a description of the buck and they told me a WCO would call me back. Out the door I go and search the little woodlot for several hours. Nothing!! Back home to check my messages and the local WCO left me a message saying that he needs to meet with me where I said I shot the deer.

Met the WCO and after alot of checking me, my stand and my story confirmed that he had my buck. Turns out I had made a good high lung shot which is why there was no immediate bleeding and the deer was dead on its feet but had slid off of a hill next to my hunting spot. I would have found that deer I morning for sure if he did not take a step too far to the left.

Met the WCO at another area and he had my buck on the rack on his truck. The meat was at that point no good but I was able to salvage the cape for a nice european mount. A nice buck that I am thankful that I was able to recover and tag after a really long night and day tracking him down.

Many thanks go out to the PGC who were professional yet thorough with a fair outcome.

Sorry for the crappy pics but under the circimstances about the best I have. He is a 2.5 y/o 8 point with a 16 inch spread and a busted G2 on the left.

Good eye there hed.  That is my daughters playhouse and yes it is pink.  My shed is a nice shade of rusty brown.

Thanks to all.  I was truly fortunate that this worked out the way it did.  A needle in a haystack to recover this buck.  Lots of emails, phone calls and investigation but it worked out in the end.

Why would the WCO let the meat go bad?

Don't think he let the meat go bad as he never would have thought that the shooter of this buck would be able to track it down.  It was just a long process to get this thing tracked down and I did need to meet him at the spot where I was hunting for the investigation whick took some time.

From when the deer died which was probably 6:20pm till I first had contact with the WCO it was 10:00am the next morning and the temps where mild.  He was able to meet me at about 2:00pm for the investigation and when everything checked out, had to drive and meet him where he had my deer. That was probably about 3:30pm.

The chances of me ever recovering this buck where about as low as it gets, and the PGC went above and beyond to allow me to put my tag on it, regardless if the meat was good or not.

Bad luck for sure, I would have found the deer in the morning if he would have stayed in the treeline.  Weird turn of events but I accept them and am proud to be able to eventually tag this buck.  Have been watching him and a few others all summer and was able to close the deal.

Congratulations.  I saw a post about this on a different forum.  Ain't the internet grand?  20 years ago you never would have gotten together with him.

Yes, I am done.  Tagged him at my request.  He was one of the three bucks I was targeting.  Wouldn't feel right about possibly killing another buck.

I was asked a very pointed question by the WCO.  "Are you going to tag that buck even though the meat is bad".  When I responded I planned to, only then did he say that he would allow me to keep the head as I made very attempt to find him and track him down through the PGC.

I have four doe tags and plan on redemption.

Thats cool! I shot a 10 point 2 years ago first da of rifle season in the pouring down rain and it had a large lump on its neck and green slime coming out. I decided to give it to the pagc for a replacement tag. I can honestly say I wish I would have kept the rack for mounting and memories cause someday I will probably forget what he looked like. The warden ask me if I was sure I wanted to give him up it was the nicest one he seen that day. Oh well will life goes on and I had six or seven doe tags that year. Stupid me!
