I  would like to know if anyone has an idea about this years fishing season? I hope that it will be a good year , as i was there in may and saw alot of dead lamprey in the water and hope it won't lead to a bad year.

The dead Lampreys were due to putting a substance in the river (at the dam I think) to kill them off while they are spawning.
This year should be good. All the data and the past few years,  returns and size of the fish points to a good time. All we need is some rain to make it a bit more sporting when they do come...
    Just my thoughts.

what i see are from behind my computer and some local input are a smaller class fish
from my point of view with the increased natural reproduction, more fish mean more compete for the same food source
seems like a pattern over the last 5 (or so) years
so what this may mean is more fish but smaller in size
at some point it turns bad, but in no way do i want to raise a red flag without facts to support
keep tract of the size and keep us posted

    the hatchery also keeps records.

From what I have learned just recently the reservoir is at a VERY LOW water level. If they can't release at least 335 soon it is going to be one lousy year as far as the total experience its self. The fish will be concentrated in the holes and any little runs and the mob will be standing on top of each other to get at them, not a pretty picture!

the water on the Salmon River is currently running at 163cfs and there is no plan in the near future for water release , the resevoir is currenty 7 feet down fron normal level so without some serious rain there wont be water, the Kings and Co Hos will run no matter what the water level is when its natures time, currently there are some pods comming in but nothing to get serious about

You're right Flyman the Salmon will come even if it stays at the trickle that is there now,but it sure is n't going to be a good time fishing for them.Low water makes a crowded SR even more crowded, the lifters will have a field day!

Will the volume of water be greater by the first week of October? Am a first timer that week, to the Salmon.

More likely than not they will raise the level to 335 sometime in the next week or two, rain or no rain there is alot of money involved in this so they will raise it,and 335 is tolerable but 750 would be much better. If they don't get a lot of rain sometime this month 335 is all there will be.

Don't expect 335 cfs for sometime unless the area gets a really really good soaking. If the res. doesn't have enough water in it to run 335 they won't.

Not sure what pafisher means by alot of money involved in this??

yeah- if no rain in the next two weeks expect to see 110. Can't raise the water level if there is no water to release. Other than that- everyone is right on... few pods of fish coming in on a daily basis. Salmon have been seen as far up as Unemployment hole. Concentrate on the lower river... pray for rain...

I hope there is more there than 110!.......Salmon bring people, people spend money in the local economy and that money is a BIG boost to that area, lack of water may keep some people from coming.....I might be one of them.

water will not be released until the resevoir has more in it, this is stated in a Federal Water Act that the dam has to adhere to no matter what(its is federally mandated) there is talk of lowering the flow even more to conservre the resevoir, hope not but the snaggers are going to be in heaven, if you have a chance go and explore the holes while water is low and you will have a great advantage once the water is up

    JeffL and Flyman1 and everyone...

This was a statement released on August 20th, 2007 - regarding the low water.

On August 20, 2007 Brookfield Power, the NYSDEC and US Fish & Wildlife Service(Executive Committee of the Salmon River Flow Management Team) agreed it would be in the best interest of the Salmon River watershed to cancel the September 1st & 2nd scheduled whitewater release and delay the scheduled September 1 start of the 335 cfs base flow. Due to the drought conditions in NY State, the Salmon River Reservoir is currently more than 7 feet below average elevations on this date for the period of record from 1998-2005 and 1.5 feet below the elevation on this date during 2006, when a special drawdown was taken to facilitate a dam rehabilitation project. The September 1st & 2nd whitewater release would further diminish the reservoir storage and further delay the start of the 335 cfs fall base flows (per the Salmon River Settlement Agreement, base flows take precedence over whitewater releases).

So with that being said - it looks to me like they (Brookfield Power et al.) do not have to follow the Federal Water Act, and that they will at some point will release a 335 cfs flow to draw the fish in.  It probably will not be a long release, maybe a few days, and then back down.  But it will be long enough (most likely) to get a ton of fish up river to the hatchery for a good egg taking.

Hmmm - Don't they usually harvest eggs at the Hatchery on the last Friday of September?  Which would be September 28th.  And if it takes Chinook Salmon about 48 to 72 hours to run the river, cohos less time than that...does it seem "fishy" to anyone that a high water release might take place for the weekend of September 22nd and September 23rd.   That would - of course - mean that I would miss it by 1 week AGAIN!

the Water Act is in reference to them releasing water when the resevoir is below 5 feet than normal, a few years ago they had drought conditions and water was not released until mid October following 3 days of rain, at the time of this drought water was at 110cfs for the whole month of september, but at that time kings and cohos ran the river system like crazy the 3rd week of sept, also alot of fish spawned in the estuary and died there, just pray for rain, the forecast for Pulaski is calling for some rain this weekend

I hope the DEC has every available resource at the SR the 3rd week of Sept., or whenever they make the run ,to nail all the lifters/snaggers that will be there yanking away, they will make mucho bucks for the state.

I didn't think they have a set date every year to harvest eggs. I had always thought it was in Oct. anyways.

Regardless- I don't see them raising the water without any rain, even if for a day. As on SC- 2002 was 110 through sept and that was a banner year...

    Flyman1-

oh I remember the low water days.  I was still living in Utica at the time.  I was fishing the river every Thursday through Sunday from labor through Columbus Day.  I remember fishing the DSR, standing on my rock, watching over the pool and seeing litterally 50 fish in front of me.  I would drop a fly at the top of the pool...watch it all the way through the pool, as the fish would veer and scatter from it, then go right back to formation.

Everyone was waiting for water... And when it came.  It was a field day, as 10,000 salmon ran the river in 12 hours.  Oh yeah - that was the day that I couldn't fish due to some STUPID "family" obligation.  Oh you gotta hate those... :)

Okay- the last thing that we really want to see is me dancing- but that is a whole different story :)

I have been watching the weather carefully, and all I realy see is this dry pattern continuing.  I mean the showers this weekend may give a 1/4" of rain, but that is nothing.  We really need tropical moisture and unless something FREAKY happens with that batch of clouds sitting off of the GA/SC coast it is going to be very difficult to get heavy rains up to Lake Ontario and CNY.

    Sorry!

2 years ago they took eggs the 1st week of October, first time I got to see how they do it. Was surprised to see all that went into the green dumpster.

heres the water forecast for the salmon river doesnt look good

For the Salmon River at Brookfield Power's Lighthouse Hill Dam, Altmar, NY. The following predictions are for flows in the river just below the powerhouse unless otherwise noted.

Information about the timing of water level changes downstream of the powerhouse is included after the forecast.

Due to drought conditions and low reservoir levels, base flows have been reduced until further notice.

Until 9:00 AM tomorrow, Thu, 163 CFS
From 9:00 AM tomorrow until 11:59 PM Sun, 100 CFS
