Heading up Sunday

I will be making the drive up on Sunday.  I don't want to ask one million questions about where exactly I should fish etc.  I do however have one question.  How far upstream have the fish made it up Elk ?  Thanks ahead of time for your help and info.

Supposed to be cold and rainy all weekend.  Could affect the fishability of the creeks to the worse.  But that shouldn't stop 3,000 people from heading up to be disappointed.   Just to give you and Idea.  I'm developing the "One Fly" and I've cancelled thre trips up so far this fall due to less than optimum conditions (actually lousy conditions.)  If I lived 10 miles I might drive over and check things out but I sure wouldn't drive from Pittsburg unless I was sure conditions were what I wanted.
Next!  There are a few fish waaay up the creeks but very few, repeat very few. I will be going up Wednesday after all the rain.

Well, I'm about 2.5 hours away and i hope to make a trip up on sunday as well. The way i see it there might not be as many fish, but there also will be quite a few less people than there will be about 3 weeks from now. So if i catch 1 or 2 fish i will have a better day than i may trying to fight the huge crowd to land the same number of fish. ***P.S. i may have had a few Labatts before i wrote this message...

    the fish by-passed this area.

the fish were hiding under the rocks, they were affraid of getting stepped on

the fish are trying not to get snagged in this picture.

from east bank, continuing to walk south.  the fish are hiding under the falls but there are only 5

fish are delicately chewing the bait off the hook while this guy has his hands in his coat pocket

Maybe we need a twitter so all those who need moment by moment updates can get the latest info.  Maybe we could install GPS locators in everyone's fishing rods, so folks can see where people are fishing and therefore get the best locations in real time.  Even better maybe the Fish Commission could put some type of tracking device in the steelies and we could track them so we will know when they return to the creeks and where they are.  Underwater cameras at the mouth of the streams could be helpful too.

I am coming to the conclusion that with our modern technology where many of our younger generation cannot seem to put down their cell phones for a few minutes and are constantly texting or calling their friends we have a created a culture that demands instant information.  Combined with this there seems to be an expectation that successful fishing is only when the conditions are perfect and a ton of fish are caught.  We want to take all the elements of guesswork out of fishing and have a guarantee of success.

I am old school when it comes to fishing.  The cell phone stays in the car.  I hit the stream for peace and quiet and enjoy being away from my daily grind and fish because I love the experience of it.  I look at fishing or hunting as game where I test my knowledge of the critters and conditions.  I personally find more satisfaction out of my experiences in the field when I matched my wits with the critters than when someone takes me by the hand, puts me in front of the critters and baits my hook or loads my gun, helps me aim or cast and then shoot the critter or hook the fish.

With some very basic information about how to fish and what conditions are good you have all you really need.

Good luck when you come to fish.

Yeah yeah yeah, that's all well and good, guys.

    But what I wanna know...

...all the steelheads in DTs pics...where will they be next friday? Will they be up to the falls? Will they be hitting on white streamers? And how much shot do I need to put on my line?

cold, i bought a pair of three D, polerized computer sunglasses with mega pixels so i can see thru the water while examining pictures on my comp. if you send me an up to date picture, i'll tell you where the fish are in the picture.
( for a $$ donation i can buy a cell phone and text you the info while you're on the stream).

Hey! There's no need for that kind of talk...I'm just trying to be friendly here!

I dont want to lose any fish, so im gonna replace the line on that kit with good line. The big steelheads are 15 pounds, so I think I will use 20 pound line. can i just use some leftover fly line backing? its 20 pounds.
