last weekend

Me and a friend went up for the first time last Saturday. Fished from about 2 til 7 just up from the bridge in Pulaski - skunked. Next morning we set out at daybreak and fished upstream til about 2 in the rain saw two hookups all day (not ours). Then we decided to join the crowd down stream and from 4:00 on it was on fire with kings.
I assumed that fishing for them would be similar to steelie-NOT! I'm an avid steelhead fisher and floated everything I could find with no hookups untill I threw on cannon balls and sponge. (wuts up with THAT)
As for steelie, I didn't see any. Just rumors of his lurking. THose few hours of action were worth the whole trip, CANT WAIT to do it again.

Old,were those fish hitting after the switch,or were they foulhooked? If they were hitting it could be the float method wa n't getting the lure down in front of them at their level.

both. We hooked em in the mouth but also had some just get snagged. Yeah, i'm thinkin i just didnt have enough weight, at leaste when we were down stream and the water was wild. But i did have enough when I was in bigger slow water. Again though, I was fishing as if they were like steelie, so my presentation was ticking the bottom. That's not where they hang is it?...

I find that the Salmon that are hanging in the slow deep water are hard to entice from the bank and are sometimes really just hanging at mid depth.I fish the water that is moving where the fish are active and aggressive, there I like to swing streamers and get those hard hits,or high stick with nympths, egg patterns, etc and catch them that way.

Thats what I was attempting to do. Me thinks i just didnt have enough weight in that fast water to get the fly/sac/bead down to em. Got real hungry too and didn't wanna leave. Seems a guy could make a killing deliverin pizzas in a drift boat. Maybe some beer n splitshot too.

turbulent water... hands down the best salmon water...  slow deep water gives the fish too much foresight and by the time your line is down near them they simply just hover a little to the left or right.  also, in slow deeper pools, salmon are usually moving around eventhough they're resting.  in fast water, they will find that perfect spot and just sit for 30 seconds up to 20 minutes.  you never know. good luck

In the slow deeper pools the Salmon sleep, do you like to eat when you

sleep ?  Yea much tougher fishing the slow thick water, but it can be done

successfully with light tackle and very little weight. Just the opposite of

what you would think would be needed. I don't even want my fly near the

bottom in heavy water. BTW, black sponge just blows my mind. I've seen

Kings rise and take it off the surface !!
