a traditional cast wouldn't work with what was behind me
the cress was thick and the openings were choked so you needed to get down quick
i never fish streamers and ramdomly threw that in the box
 
hindsight
quick stroke and verticly stacked line was not a good choice

lucky you didn't smack yourself in the face... I assume the shot rocketed out of the water at machlll and hit the rod?

it was on the forward cast
started before the loop laid out... then POP
nothing touched the rod
 
i was "upcasting" and building line verticaly
 
 
all for not...
as the 3/8ths of a rod was thowing super tight loops and shot 30ish to hit that riser
mends were not happening

Saw some Russian guys casting that same setup this weekend with a flyrod ,their rods did not break.

i have 2 of the older 3LED lights with the string strap... always have one in the wading jacket
this one (while only 1 bulb) is a more comfortable elastic strap

     My guess based on actual experience  (I've broken some) is that the glob of split shot must have smacked the rod on some occasion and caused a stress freacture and the loading you were putting on the rod caused the break,  My guess is you're casting thru your line.  A simple correction in casting technique is all it takes to change it.  Never broke another rod after I changed.
