Buried treasure

Gentlemen,
As most of you know I repair/restore old bamboo fly rods for a hobby.  Last week I made a very plesant discovery.  I started work on a rod which I thought was about 60 years old but the reel seat and the taper looked all wrong.  The wraps were shot and the ferules were a mess.  It was also covered in about three layes of red varnish which was cracked.  (the only rod that looks good in red is an OLD Goodwin Granger).  Well when I stripped off the old varnish and cleaned the blank I discovered the shadows from intermediate wrappings.  also I discovered that the reel seat and cap didn't match.  It turns out this rod is closer to 100 years old and in desperate need of Restoration.  So here goes a resto rod.  after 100 years it will live again.  Including appropriate reel seat and locking ring.  A real diamond find.  It won't be flashy but it should showcase real antique building techniques.

    Skip,
I'm already well into during.  And since I can't post pictures from my 'puter' you'll just have to wait for the One Fly to see the results.  Trust me about the before.  Even the reel seat was dented.  It looked like it had been used as a hammer.

    Gentlemen,
Well the "burried treasure" has been re-born.  I did the best I could using the scraps and bits of wrappings that I found under all the old varnish.  The varnish was soo thick I thought the rod was impregnated with brown, or flamed.  Actually it's blond.  To me it looks like a Christmas Tree.  But to somebody else it probably is the height of "antique".  It will be at the PSA picnic and maybe the "One Fly".  If you're a rod builder and ever looking for "fun" do a rod with 106 wraps and intermediates.  That's almost 1 per inch.  Hope somebody likes it.  I'm thinking maybe it'll need a home.
