great trip

first time ever salmon fishing at polaski, and we did great for a couple amatures, first fish landed was a 18 pound coho, then a 8 pound steelhead ,then a hybrid 28 pounder, and some other smaller ones, my friend got a 24 pound king, a beutiful 15 pound brown and a few other smaller ones, i think we ended up with 12 fish we took home, had about 100 hook ups between us and about spooled me twice by some huge fish that was like a freight train and i couldnt even slow them down with my big****tackle,
ny has done an awsome job with there fish management, wish vermont could do the same

thanks for all your tips and tricks

What were they eating? 28# is a nice Salmon. I saw pics. of Hybreds. They thought some of them were record Coho's last year.

Nice trip. Sounds like you have Salmon Fever now... The worst incurable disease. LOL!

Hybreds are a cross of Coho and Chinook. There were some very large ones caught last year that were bigger than the world record Coho hybred caught years ago. They were not classified as new world records for the Coho Salmon. Funny how they recognize the older hybred as world record but will not recognize any newer/ larger ones for the record. Personally it should be removed and made into a new category. I heard that they let it be the world record because they didn't have the technology for telling the difference.

I have a 24# cohook (hince the site name) on my wall. Real nice lookin fish, body of a king, brown back with a purple/red hue down the side. White belly and mouth with a huge kype. Glad you had a  good     first trip. I fished again on thursday and again dealt with a spurt of coho in the morning followed by kings at noon. Caught and released 3 coho and 4 kings. I think it's safe to say now you can go up any time and you'll find fish everywhere, so far everybody has been decent, still the occasional yahoo that likes to stand in the middle of the run, but they learn when my line wraps around them from a screamer.

Stress is just one hookset away from being gone.

If you've got the $ and a line on a good taxidermist I say go for it! My biggest Salmon was 33# and it was a monster of a fish. It was either 43 or 44" long. It was before I carried a camera (maybe 5 years ago) and it got eaten. I wish I'd kept his teeth for a necklace- haha.
I keep some if they're fresh. My wife likes me to bring a Steelhead home for eating too.
So if I'm lucky enough to catch any on my last day I bring a fish home on ice for the kids to see before cutting up too.

PS- my flies are crap too. Out of the 1/2 dozen I may take a pic. of for whatever there's a hundred that I hope this fish will find more appealing than I do...

salmo, cohoes will not be long gone.  there is always a late october early november push of cohoes.  i saw cohoes as late as febuary last year.  if you're going in three weeks and you want to find cohoes, fish the upper river and pray the water will be on the higher side.  if it is, fish the little channels off of the main river.  spots you would never imagine fishing.  you will find aggressive angry males that are huge and beat red sided with teeth and a kype that you'd be affraid to come near.  back near my property there are some little fingers where these cohoes congregate.  there is actually a little stream that they make it up.  i don't fish for them, but it is beautiful to watch.  good luck

oh yeah, i caught one of those hybrids in early september.  the tail is where you know it's not a cohoe. if you can pick that fish upside down by it's tail, it's not a cohoe.  the hybrids have a black mouth, so you'd think they're a coho.  i've seen them for years though.  never read up onthem or about them, but always assumed they were a mix.  they have a coho mouth, and coho black dot markings.

Good job man,  I was up this weekend fishing around the willow hole caught nothing.  Only saw 2 landed too.  Got a few hits but couldn't set the hooks in time.

Try not to set the hook till you've had the fish on your reel for a minute. When you feel bumps, mostly that's your fly or bait hitting the fish and when you set the hook on that feel, all you get is a piece of arse.

A real take, you'll know immediately(this time of year) and all you need to do is just raise your rod tip. Let the rod do the work. This ensure's that you have a good hook-up right in the mouth.

When the fish is on and you feel that good head shake then get a good grip and set that hook, doesn't need too be an big jerk, just pull the rod back a good foot or so while their is no slack in the line.

Try this out, just a few tip's to get good solid hook-ups.

    Tight Lines,

it sounds like you fish like me old salt.  i'm gonna asume you fish white water seems.  hands down the most productive salmon water.  people don't realize that where ever there's white water,  there are protions that have no current within that white water, and the salmon hang there...  most of my hookups are a headshake exploding out of the water before i can even think..  fish on...  oh yeah, no your water  before you fish it... snags/rocks, and safety...

18 pound Coho is an absolute monster, congratulations!!!  I've never landed one even close to that, might have hooked a few but landing them is a different story.
