Need some advice

Heading up for the weekend of 9/7 & 8. Not necessarily "targeting" anything in particular, just bringing a friend up to see and fish the river. Will probably try to avoid the lower river and the crowds. Any advice on flies/baits appropriate to this time would be greatly appreciated.

Comets, buggers, streamers, nymphs and some egg paterns should cover everything from fall fish to smallies to kings. Some big n bright and some more subtle.
    Good luck!

waDerboy and metalslayer know the River well. No question thier advice is golden (along with many others here) when it comes to fishing the Salmon River.

At what point are you considered to be in the "lower" river? Don't want to completely avoid the fish but, as my friend has very little experience wader fishing in a river, I don't want to get him in a crowd first time out. I don't think it would be productive for him nor fair to the more experienced anglers present. I'd like to work with him in a less populated area of the river so he can learn proper etiquette and get a feel for what to expect when he does hook a fish. I'd still want him to have a chance at a fish, though, regardless of the species.

I wouldn't do much fishing above the metal bridge (rt52) in Pineville at that time. Preferably below rt2a bridge and if I really had to hook up the ball park down would be my choice. Trouble is the crowd will double as you go downstream each of these times.

Thanks for the info and advice, guys. We'll give it our best shot and hope for the best. No matter what, it sure beats sitting in the office.

If you guys can swing the $30/day the DSR looks like it will be your best option. The people down there tend to be friendlier than most of the public areas.

I didn't say that because you said forget the lower river. At this time if year THE PLACE TO BE is the DSR. Freshest fish that haven't had time to sread out.

Then the DSR sounds like a plan.  Again, thanks so much for the input.

if your going to fish 2 days i'd say start mid river and work your way down
the places waDer mentioned are good, just walk a bit away from the parking and explore
then if that don't pan out than give the DSR a shot in the afternoon & or next day
the afternoons seem to be hot down there stay as late as possible
you may have good success fishing the public areas or not as may be the case fishing private water
it gives you more options also instead of being locked into dsr from the get go and possibly dissapointed not wanting to return

BTW: even though im a pass holder i fish other areas of the river as well

    Gentlemen,
OK, OK,  What is the DSR?  Designated Snagging Area?  Desperate Spinsters Resort?   What and where is it?  Plus I get the impression that it costs extra to fish it?

    indsguiz -

DSR - the Douglaston Salmon Run.  It is a piece of land that includes the first 2 miles of river out of the estuary to the Black Hole (but not including the Black Hole).  It is private land, that is fished by mainly fly anglers, but not all.  There are many different types of water, and it is popular.  They do not let more than 380 customers in per day, therefore keeping the crowds down.  The cost is $30 per day and you still need a NYS fishing permit.  All rules of the Salmon River and NY State fishing apply, but there are some other local rules for that section, that you must follow.  The rules are enforced more than the rest of the river and it is "patrolled" by the DSR staff.

Dadeeo, if your only interest is to introduce your friend to the river, then I would suggest taking him somewhere around the middle.  Ball Park or Railroad Pools are great places to learn at this time of year.  If you go to DSR (Desperate Spinsters Resort- LMAO) make sure you both have corkers or some type of cleats.  It's been my experience that DSR tends to be a bit more slippery than the rest of the river.

You should have been here yesterday !!

If you are going to wade anywhere in the SR you should have spikes/corkers on the bottom of the boots,it's slippery everywhere. However,if they don't receive a bunch of rain soon there is n't going to be much water to wade, and the fishing experience will be less than fun.
