Fly Reels and Flies.

Looking for some of you fly fishing guys to help me out, i have an old friend of mine that was in the navy with me coming up for salmon fishing and he fly fishes. i usually use spin rod with egg sacs or streamers. i just need to find out what kind of flies he needs and what he needs for backing, fly line and stuff like that. i don't fly fish so i couldn't really answer him to what he needs. he has a 6,7, and 10 weight fly rod and i just need to know what he needs to get so he can fish for salmon. thanks guys.

If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles.

Comets are a good choice.  An anti-reverse fly reel would be a plus but not necessary, just have a reel that can accomodate a lot of backing.  Out of the rods you mentioned he should use the 10 wt.

A 10' 8wt is the ideal rod. My choice over the rods listed would be fish the 7wt. and leave the 10wt in car as back up.
Line suits the rods WFF (flyline) > up or down 1 is fine. Tippet of 10lb on the 7, 12 on the 10wt. 150 yards 30# backing.
Flies, size 4>6 , bunny or egg sucking leeches , comets. Big and in their face.. About 4 dozen mix, flash to natural drab would cover it.

If one really choses to fly fish salmon then work it traditional in proper 4>8' water with min. weight. Not every fish will strike but it opens some eyes.

my buddy asked about a fly called a "popsicle". he was calling around some local shops about flies and he heard the usual bunnys, comets, and egg sucking leaches. does anybody know about the "popsicl" fly?

If it's the same popsicle that I am thinking of. It's a traditional marabou pattern used for salmon and steelhead. Like a marabou spey pattern.

Google "George Cook Popsicle" should give you a picture.
