Strike Indicator How-To

For those of you who like yarn indicators and tie your own flies, here is a solution to reducing your costs of paying 5 bucks for 3 indicators.  I personally am a fan of thingamabobbers, but Ill probably spin a few up since I don't use glo bug yarn anymore and have a ton of it.

I'd imagine you can treat the glo-bug yarn in some floatant before making it, although the video didn't specify.

Hope this can help some of you!

Get the foam at the craft store and do the same thing.   I use 15-16 1/8 inch strips about 3 inches long.  Floats heck of a lot better than yarn.  Get the rings at Lowe's or Home Depot.

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

For Pa. erie sthd get the white thingamabobbers, 1/2 and 3/4", IMO the best period. Rig them on a 1/2" dropper tied to the butt section of your leader. If you loop them on as recommended your leader will cut through the plastic around the metal ring after fishing for a day or so.

Some people I know have had this problem too, I take a little bit of zap-a-gap when I get them and roll a ring around the outside of it to strengthen it...never had a problem and have had only one come apart on me....

Your idea isn't a bad one, excepting the fact that you can't adjust depth if u need to, and the fact that it isn't "inline" with the fly...IMO I think that would elude to missing strikes...

i make my own and instead of tying thread around mine i use a second  o ring in about size 1/8 to 3/16 and it easier than tying and have not had one to come lose so far

Loomis,  You mentioned using zap a gap to reinforce around the ring of a thingamabobber. Sounds like a good idea, I might try that.  The dropper method That I use works well and the dropper knot is a 4 turn overhand knot tied around the leader butt section. This knot is easier to slide up or down to adjust for depth than a looped on indicator.

Regarding missing fish using an indicator rigged this way, can't say that I have noticed any difference, though you make a good point and it is something to consider.

Before I thread the loop through the hole on a thingamabobber, I tie a loose overhand knot with the loop then thread it through the eyelet....you've got to develop a system to keep the thing from sliding down your leader.

I never will either if I'm fishing the Catt, salmon river, oak orchard, or other bigger water well suited for swinging.

I make mine out of the foam like SilverKype. They float great and don't need to be treated with any kind of floatant. Here's some pics of some I made recently.
