i think i seen alot of trout in the mon

i was fishing right before lock 4 on the charleroi monnesen bridge side and i seen a whole bunch of fish jumping in the more high current water. so i decided to bend down and feel the water temp and i was startled by how cold the water was. i think i may have found the elusive mon river trout

The Mon River does hold some trout. Have caught several myself along with seeing others catch them. Do however doubt the likeliness of finding a school of them as mentioned above. Possible but not likely probable. Catch one and see.

skipjack feed in the fastest waters. they move in and out in schools and they are very fast. the only place you will find them is below the locks in the swift water feeding on the minnies. there wasnt been many in the mon. over the years but the ohio is loaded. thousands at a time move up river from the south as the water warms. they are by far the best catfish bait out there. i been catching them on the ohio at the new martinsville locks bout 45 min south of wheeling. when they are there you can fill coolers up. my buddies dad caught 1 last year at maxwell locks. the 1st won i ever saw out of the mon. i know a guy thats catches a good bit of them at the pointmarion locks. they kinda look like a tiny tarpon. look them up on line. SKIPJACK HERRING. you will see, i bet thats what they are.

i have seen trout caught in the mon. i have caught 1 my self bout 18 years ago, but that was near a creek that is stocked. theres not that many to where you are going to be seeing them jumping more than 1 or 2 at a time.

There are several stocked streams that flow directly into the Mon ;Ten mile, Whitely creek, Pike RUn and Mingo Creek  The mouths of these creeks are pretty good for trout in the late spring. Considering Rainbows may travel 25 miles a day it is probable that many can be caught in the MoN

I catch trout every year near the locks in Charleroi. I have only caught one this year, but I have only fished it twice. A couple of years ago, I managed to catch about an 18" tiger trout off of the wall at Lock 4. I always throw them back.

A lot of times schools of smallmouth/white bass etc will push a school of shad or whatnot up against a lock wall/bridge piling.  It'll be a feeding frenzy, water exploding, etc.  I used to see this fairly often when I fished/worked on the Mon a lot.
