PGC claims 1/2 buck to doe ratio

New issue of North American Whitetail Magazine has a feature on the Pa deer managemant plan and it's progress.  Chris Rosenberry states that the current buck to doe ratio in Pa. is 1/2.

That is pretty darn for 5 years of trying.  That is the same ratio that alot of high fenced ranches strive for.  I personally do not buy it statewide though.

Our ratio is much better than what it was but not close to 1/2.

    One area I hunted last year .. I'd say 1:1.  All others 1:5 - 1:6.

    This year it appears 1:6.

My opinion, I'd like 1:3 - 1:4.  To much intensity with 1:1 - 1:2.  Where it was 1:1 last year where I hunted, other one buck had a full hack.  All other decent ones were half racks.  If our ratios at truely 1:2, expect a lot of half racks this year.  I think that's way off.

I think it is way off too.  It is way better than before but certainly not 1/2.  The PGC needs credibility and that statement by thier deer manager seems a little hard to swallow without some evidence to back that up on both public and private lands.

I do believe that ratio exists in some pockets but for a staewide average that is crazy IMO.

Trail cams aren't showing that close of a ratio..I'd say more like 1/4, Although the class of buck has upgraded some. Seeing a few more 3-4 year olds..

I have noticed a 1:3 ratio where I hunt. I dont doubt that there are some areas that have a 1:2 ratio, but I doubt many areas see it. Regardless, I like 1:3 much better than 1:16.

    I seriously doubt it's 1:2 in 2B.

    Interesting J.

My opinion is that even extensive observations of deer whether it be from a trail cam, spotlight, or even in the woods, do not tell the whole story.  Let's face it, bucks are more secretive than doe.  The older bucks in my areas don't move far, especially after a small amount of pressure.  They live close to heavy cover, food, and water.  I've only seen 3-4  3+ year old bucks so far this year.  Come late October and November, there will be nights where I see 3-4 in one night.  While there aren't many older bucks where I hunt compared to overall herd numbers, there are more than I think and more than I see.  If one spends alot of time in the woods during the rut, you'll get a true sense of actual ratios.  Just like women ****ing, bucks gotta roam.  It's just the nature of the beast.
