weird

So dad has a local skunk.  It's sprayed the dog twice .. so he put out a trap to catch it.  Naturally, he's caught everything but the skunk, including two squirrels, which both were found dead.  There is a "ring" around the trap like a ring a dog makes around a doghouse. 
 
This may seem silly but, is there a chance the squirrels had a heartattack from a bobcat (we got one of these consistently around too) or fox/coyote trying to get at them.  It just seems odd I guess that both squirrels died in separate occurances.

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

    Not sure what would cause the " ring " around the trap , understanding that fox, coyote, and possibly a bobcat are more noctornal hunters. Try placing the trap out towards dusk to eliminate the risk of catching squirrels.Then take the trap in during the day.Skunks are noctornal critters as well.Unless there's something wrong with it

    I'm guessing what he is referring to is what is called a "catch circle." Basically it's a torn up ground the length of the trap and chain  that the animal makes while it's in the trap.
     
    Not sure what could've killed the squirrels.
     
    Exposure is one thing that comes to mind.
