I guess I'm partially to blame for this...but it seems like the steelhead stuff is getting started much earlier than it did last year...I dont know if that's a good or a bad thing...

Angler, I wouldnt count on it. There are many more factors than stream conditions that determine when they run, not the least among them temperature, length of day, and instinct. Not saying there arent any, but I dont think you'll have trouble getting a spot at the stopsign hole this weekend. Even if a few of the locals know of some steel in the tribs, I'd think that they'd try to refrain from publishing it all over the net just for a few fish.

nah.  usually around the end of july the steelhead talk starts to gain some tread before its full blown explosion in mid-late august.

see last year's "first steelies of the year" thread that was staged in august 08

And that poor guy got torn up for it. Don't think I've seen him around since.

I'm sure there are a few coming in at night, especially with allthe rain we've been getting. As they will all through August. None will stick around though and most will be back out in the Lake as soon as the sun hits the water.

Early steel usually coincides with east winds and colder h20 temps that they bring. Watch the weather, wind and lake temp to figure out for yourself when you may have a shot at some early steel. Then go give it a go, pretty rewarding figuring it out on your own.

Seems that when the lake temp starts to settle at 65 or below, that the steelhead start showing up and sticking around for a bit in the lower reaches of the tribs. Those temps plus rain seem to move things along. I've had a couple of decent outings in mid-September in the past couple of years, but nothing stellar.

The WCO report from last week said that the water temps were 71. With the dog days of August coming (maybe) that will probably rise before it falls significantly.

But if you're from Girard, it shouldn't take much to go find out for yourself.

    Stirring the steel pot prematurely.

Up in the fly forum I revived my thread from last year about a heavier stick for steel, and it seems like since then, there's been 8-10 new threads about steelie-related stuff. Fly patterns, colors, early runs, special regs...the usual suspects.

I walked(lower) Elk last Sunday. I did see some carp and a bunch of smaller browns(about 12 inchers). I was pressed for time, but if you put in the effort I am sure there will be some steelys somewhere in that stream. Years back I saw a beautiful Brown trout about 26 inches under the Rt. 5 bridge in EARLY JULY!!! He went under a tree and stayed there.  Sometimes its just nice to be out on the water.

I usually take a walk along my favorite stretches of my most frequented streams in late august to see all the changes from the previous year. New holes where I thought there never would be and holes that have been filled in. The cricks change from year to year , some change more and some change a little. Just gives you more to look for when it comes time to burn your drag. It is nice to be able to go and have a look see being a local and to some extent have a leg up on the area of crick I want to start out on when the time comes. There is really no secrets for those who do some walking to find the fish. Ive walked miles to find new stuff to fish and sometimes I find solitude. Not often but sometimes. The best part for me is knowing where a potential spot is that might hold fish when you cant see em, and then hooking up right where you thought you would when others walk right on by.

There pri left over steelies from last year. Also the brown trout stocking program is going on and those trout have grown to like 16-20 inches fast

DJ its not nice to lie. you had me gasping for breath when you said you were catching that many fresh steel. dont live by erie but i fish a creek called mingo creek in the summer and whenever i fish it people look at me like i have a sign that says i eat carp on my back. then those same people look at me in disbelief when i am walking out of there with a rainbow on my stringer.(its a stocked stream that doesnt really support year round trout, altough there have been reports of some holdovers)

You're right.  Us Girard folks usually just walk out our backyards to Elk to just take a looksy.
