Trolling motor

Just bought a 17' runabout and was wondering with everyone's experience what size and brand of bow mount trolling motor would be best suited for this boat? Also is it worth putting on the quick release mount or just to mount it permanent in the boat.
Thanx for any input.

Just got a Sea Ray that I cleaned up, and being as I'm not sure how long I'm keeping it, a friend and I made a temp. removable mount that may look a "little" goofy, but it works great. Also added a rod holder board on the back. No holes anywhere, even the fish finder is velcro'd !! If I need to sell it, it is in original shape with no x-tra holes. Plus the electic ,mount and all, is easy on easy off being as the cover was custom fitted. If anyone is curious, or just needs a good chuckle, let me know and I'll post some pics !

I'd like to see some pictures, I'm looking for any good ideas, as I want to remove it every time the kids want to ski.

You shouldn't need a monster on a 17', I've had good luck with MinnKota and would recommend the quick release mount just for peace of mind. You can quickly remove the motor if you're staying at a hotel or leaving the boat sit somewhere unsecured. At the very least you want foot controlled and possibly even remote controlled, gotta love technology.

Go with a 24 volt motor. At least 55lb thrust. Minn kota or motor guide both are good motors. Look at the different styles and weight the pros and cons. Find the one that fitts your needs. I will stress this go 24 volt.

I have a minnkota power drive with copiolet because i like being able to control the boat anywhere on the boat. you lose a little speed in terms of turning the boat because it is a motor that stears not your foot with cables. But i liked the flex ability the remote has for me.

Thanx for all the feedback. I was looking at at least a 55 lb thrust, but noticed most of them were only 12 volt. Do they make a 55 lb thrist in a 24 volt? And what is the advantage other than battery life?

If you are going to go with something that big, you are going to need onboard chargers or they will not last very long.

The board clears the deck, rubber dipped some U-bolts, wingnuts and a bungy strap. Foot control and battery fits neatly under the seat. On or off in 2 min. or less. Only 40lb. thrust but does the trick nicely.

i have seen a 55lb trust in 24 volt, my fishing buddy has one. I am not sure if they still have them out it is a motorguide. But none the less if you can afford it go the the next size that is 24 volt. You will see a huge different in the thick stuff, you can pack up a 12 volt with weeds, but you aint stoppin a 24 volt, also the battery(s) run longer well cause you have two of them.
