Fireline

I keep hearing the priase of Fireline because of the sensitivity and no strech.  So I'm thinking of using Berckley Fireline and not to sure on the underwater visabilty of the stuff.  I saw the original green and now crystal.  The crystal is basiclly white. Does the stuff dissapear in the water like mono?  If not, do you have to use a leader of mono or flouro with this stuff?

I got a bunch of French military rifles for sale...NEVER fired and only dropped once.

Most people use a leader varying from 3-10' of Floro. I would suggest powerpro as I have used both and the PP seems to hold up better than the fireline, it fades but still cranks the fish in.

When you say that PowerPro holds up better than Fireline, what is the downside of Fireline?  Just wondering...

I never used the stuff before so I'm going to take your recommendation of using PowerPro.  Is there a specific line color they have that is better for clear water conditions?

Fireline is a bit stiff til it gets broke-in.  The Crystal looks like rope under water.....it doesn't disappear.

I too thought that the crystal looked kinda bright when I first saw it.  I take it that both products are really tough since it's braided line.  I'm going to hit the Susquehanna this week so I think I'll run out this evening and pick up some powerpro and give it a shot.  I currently use Trilene XL and that has a TON of stretch to it and I'm about done with buying anymore of it.

I use 20lb. Fireline with Trilene XT as a leader and have had no problems.

The leader depends on how you are fishing: If you trolling, you really don't need a mono or flouro leader. Fishing with bait, yes. Casting with quick retrives, no.

dont **** with putting a leader on for top water either. braid stays afloat and gives poppers, super spooks, etc good action

Most of my fishing is done with meat during the spring and summer (fall is for killing deer and turkeys) so I'll use a leader of mono or flouro at that time. Although I do use mostly jigs with soft plastics and rapalas for eyes here on the Susquehanna during the winter months so would you suggest no leader?

The downside that I've experienced with Fireline is personal. I don't like the sound it makes as it goes through the guides as it sounds as if it's cutting them . Again , it's just personal . It is strong and sensitive and little stretch , but I prefer a copolymer and preferably with fluoro built in . Different strokes for different folks .

I wade the lake shore and Pymy for eyes the beginning of May and use a 7' Med. action rod with 20lb. Fireline Crystal no leader. I Cast Rapalas in size 9 Husky jerk and size 14 in Erie and Small plugs at Pymy and catch plenty of fish.

Fireline and Power Pro are both excellent lines. If you are fishing around alot of rocks I'd use the fireline as it seems alot more abrasion resistant to rocks. I use Power Pro or Sufix braid for all of my weed and timber fishing.

fish5000, Funny you should mention the noise Fireline makes while casting,I hate that also, sounds sort of like scraping a black board with fingernails. also I can cast farther with xl than with fireline. After using it for a while the fireline took on a shredded appearance that didn't seem to affect its strength. Even spraying the Fireline with some Reel Magic didn't stop the noise. Prob. between the two, Fireline is more abrasion resistant. But iI went back to Trilene.  sam

I use 6lb fireline for jigging walleyes. I always use a leader, usually about 18"-24" of 10lb flouro. The reason for the leader is abrasion resistance. Although fireline is tough stuff, rocks cut it like scissors. I leave the leader off for stickbaits.

Great tip deadfishred.  Jigging is the main way we fish for eyes here on the Susquehanna in the winter.  We do occationally use suspending stickbaits but jigs tipped with small/medium shinners are the way most of the time...

BTW-For those who fish the susky during the winter for eye...you also can't beat a jigged 3" white twister tail.

I jig for the eyes the majority of the time too, but I do most of 'eye fishing in from june to september, If you jig for the eyes during the warmer water periods, try tipping the jigs with 1/2 nightcrawler, for some reason, for me it works better than minnows from june to september...but they sure do love their minnows once that water temp drops under 45!

oh yeah, i caught my PB 'eye out of the susky back in '97...on a 1/4oz inline spinner!
