Hows the bite in the bay?

I'm taking one of my buddies son's to the bay for the Big Kid Little Kid Tournament on Saturday. I just want him to catch some fish. Any ideas on what to use? Plan on flippin the weeds with a sweet beaver and Jig n pig.

This time of year there are 3 ways I fish the bay...

    Flippin' weeds
Deep cranks and jigs on weed edges
    Pullin frogs in the salad

For my fishing reports, product reviews, stories, and other nonsense...

Any type of worm with a lite jig head such as a shakey head or shakey down 3/0 hook. I little weight to get through the weeds and really slow working increases sucess. If that doesn't work try throwing white/ black spinnerbaits double silver blades around rocks and weed beds especially after a good rain. Also after a drizzle try topwater around weeds or shallow water such as a heldon torpedo. I hope this helps

Thanks for the advice, this kid is always pulling jokes on me and i would love to catch a giant sheephead and convince him it is a Smallmouth and take it to the weigh in. Are you allowed to keep sheep head? Probably could find one on the humps couldn't you?

I have fished that tournament several times.

There are 3 additional $25 prizes for "other" fish catagories:

    1. Sheephead
    2. Rock Bass
    3. Northren Pike

As far as the bite in the bay......it's ok. In a tournament there a couple weekends ago I caught over 60 bass but only 3 were keepers. That seems to be the trend lately with all the tournament guys I talk to. Getting bit is easy, getting keeper bites is harder.
Check the Presque Isle Bassmasters website. They have Thursday night events, it's taking less than 10 lbs (4 fish limit) to win.
IMHO the bay is not what it was about 5 years ago for size. It was far easier to weigh over 10 lbs in 4 fish. Plenty of numbers, no size.
It's been my observation that the good weeds haven't grown well for a few years. There is alot more stringy grass as opposed to the good Milfoil or Coontail but if you find that stuff now it holds fish, it's just more difficult to find.
