weird current on lake

I have fished lake erie for the past 4 years and never experienced anything like this.

I was  fishing for perch and anchored Monday 7/20 off Ashtabula in about 65 ' of water.  The wind shifted to the East about 7 mph ( not bad) and the boat moved around and headed east ( it is well anchored) as it should do.  But as I jigged for perch. the current was pulling my line to the front of the boat and not in the wind direction.  I had to go with 1 1/4 oz to try to get a straight drop ( way to much) and still the current affected the drop.  Up to that point, I was using 3/4 oz sinker. So I gave up and headed back in.

So the question is, how in the world was the current so strong and out of the West when the wind was out of the East?  Anyone else ever  experience that?

happened to me on July 10th... there were some massive rip currents throughout NW PA....  that's my only explaination... Wind was coming out of west, then shifted NW and we drifted dead W about 1 mile before we realized it...

If I go back to College Physics 101, I recall that:

Tide involves water sloshing around over huge distances that are a different distance from the moon as a result. Lake Erie is too small to experience any measurable effect.  To be more specific both Toledo and Buffalo are approximately the same distance form the moon. Hence, gravitational force from the moon on Lake Erie would be almost the same throughout the lake.

    "sloshing"....  sounds pretty technical

toledo and buffalo are 300miles+ apart and Lake Erie is extremely shallow

proportonaly (distance to depth) speaking is very similar to the atlantic

since the distance is east to west and the shallow depts.... tides are a reality

Actually, it has nothing to do with tide. When the wind switches like that, the current is still moving in the previous wind direction until the wind blows long enough in that direction to change the movement of the water....

There are surprisingly strong curents in the lake.  I took a charter on Lake O in May and that was my first experience with a depth raider.  I was shocked when I looked at the GPS and found out we were doing 3.5MPH ground speed, but the speed at the ball, 50' down, was only 2.0MPH.  As another measure, go fish the north pier once.  Durring the day there will be changes in the waterflow in and out of the bay.  I have seen days there where 4oz. of lead will not keep my rigs in place.  Water flows, just on a body of water this large it's not that noticable.

    Sixers,

What you experienced has a much more logical explanation than anyone given here yet.  What you experienced was an artificial rip tide that was caused by the upward flow of a huge amount of hot air that originates from the walnut creek marina area.  The rising hot air pulls the water from the west, toward the east.

An interesting coincedence....most of the people on the board launch from the walnut creek marina... probably just a coincecence, but i am just saying.... lol

the current was from the west, as I stated, while the general wind direction is from the east.  The column of hot air has a localized affect on the wind directions that would not have affected the conneaut area.

My guess is that Slickfish or Bigslick was in the area at the time.  If they both were there, the two columns of hot air that they would have generated would have likely drained lake michigan, and since I didn't see anything about that on the evening news, it is safe to assume that only one of them was present.

    haha

i cant. I gotta be up there at noon and then be in williamsport for the evening...lots of miles tomorow... 400+

If tomorow goes well, I will be spending atleast two days every other week up there servicing the account, plus a full week or two during the testing period to track their metrics.

I will let you know when my next overnight is gonna be.

Wind speed. and direction play only a part of current diection, and strength/speed. The flow of the great lake system as a whole, as well as river/stream flows play a part. As does the effect of water rising, and sinking as it warms, or cools.

WHERE DID ALL THAT EXTRA WATER AND CURRENT COME FROM?
THE WIND STACKS IT UP! YOU COULD WITNESS A 1'-2' FOOT INCREASE IN WATER ELEVATION AT A BOAT LAUNCH, WHEN HIGH WAVES COME OUT OF THE NORTH. IT MAY TAKE MANY HOURS FOR THE LAKE TO FLATTEN OUT AGAIN, CAUSING THE CURRENT TO CHANGE DIRECTION,,, BACK TO THE FALLS.

What is a seiche? (pronounced "saysh")
Like water sloshing in a bathtub, seiches are tide-like rises and drops in Great Lakes coastal water levels caused by prolonged strong winds that push water toward one side of the lake, causing the water level to rise on the downwind side of the lake and to drop on the upwind side. When the wind stops, the water sloshes back and forth, with the nearshore water level rising and falling in decreasingly small amounts on both sides of the lake until it reaches equilibrium.
