A resource you all should know about

I dont know how many of you guys have used terra server, or how many even realise its free. But Im gonna post the link. Do yourself a favor and look at topo maps rather then just blunder through the woods till you find something. Find the details, then inspect... a funnel, a waterhole, a thicket....then go and see if the deer use it. Put it like this, topo maps and photos will cut your scouting by at least half. One thing that never leaves my side is the PA delorme atlas. If you buy one of those, take advantage of terra server and still cant harvest deer, you need to pick up a book on whitetails.

Yes.  Mapsend 3-D United States.  It's not as detailed as I'd like.  It doesn't have the many of the trails I walk.  That's where topozone comes in.  It's pretty neat to mark a spot in the woods then come home and put it on a topo map on a comuter screen.

My buddy and I were talking about the trail cam's that send pics to your computer thru satellite.  They are like $2000.    A bear ripped his off the tree (it was locked too!), he's getting another one.

I just ordered what I think is the same mapsend version you mentioned. I got a version of it with my gps, but it was not 3-D US.

It's pretty neat, especially for the way the deer move where I hunt.  It certainly makes spots that I didn't think were accessable, realistic.

I DO find the gps a bit frustrating sometimes.  i.e. -- marking a few spots below some road only to put them on the map and have one of the spots end up above the road.  AAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

My gps seems to have problems if I turn it on somewhere besides where I turned it off last.    I shut it off at the house and I turn it on there.

My gps takes about 2 minutes to aquire the satalites if I get away from where I turned it off. I just wait because I ALWAYS mark the truck!

I use mine mostly for geocaching. I also use the mapping feature for driving.

Havent used it much for hunting, since i've been hunting primarily the same 700 acre area my entire life, and know it like the back of my hand. Although I will say, a gps is a good way to recover your game cams. I definately would have lost a few without marking the spot.

Well, I certainly feel better about deer hunting now.

All the average hunter needs to do is start scouting in August for two or three nights per week plus the weekend; have access to a powerful computer that can connect to a mainframe at NASA or some satalite; a compatable GPS unit; and a degree in IT.

I don't see what all the complaining is about.

Sorry, I was remiss in not including a high speed, infrared, digital camera that interfaces with all of the other equipment.

I heard that is how the Native Americans were so successful.

And if settlers had Senderos, there wouldn't be reservations.

Shawn, the Native Americans did not have digital cameras. I believe they had 35mm film cameras.

    Kype,
check to see if both your GPS and software are set to the same Datum (Nad83 Or 87).  Also, before you mark a location look at the accuracy.  Many times when you are in the woods you will get multipath from the trees and it may take a bit of time before the accuracy is good, especially when you have it in your pocket.  I deal with gps a bit for my research for school and those are a few things you run in to.
