30# braid is what most charts for lure depth go by. FYI.

If your going to be trolling for muskies I would use no less than #65 braid, they hit extremely hard and the lures can be pretty pricey as well.  For walleyes we normally use #30 braid.    Power-pro and Suffix are my two favorites.

It would be hard to have one reel for such a wide variety of fish like that, walleye a good 20 or 30lb braid would be plenty, hybrids you could probably get away with that also but as esox_hunter said musky you would want 80 to 100lb braid for trolling at 5 to 8mph with a $20 lure on or it could get to be more expensive than it has to be. The 27series diawa would be a bit on the small side for musky but you could work with it. My 2 cents

You guys DO have drags on your reels, right?

I've never needed more than 12-14lb braid for hybrids, and 30lb. for KINGS. You can tow most boats, with 80-100lb.

Yeah i was just trying to get a good idea of an all around braid. And eventually one reel will turn into two, three, plainer boards, down riggers, bigger boat, bigger truck. Anyway, you get the idea. Thanks for the help though, decided on 30 for now and if i go muskie i will just up it.

    Musky trolling line?

80 or 100 lb Power Pro for its durability, reliability.  Pulling big lipped 4 oz+ plugs at 5 mph+ is very hard on line, rods, reels. This line at these tests is extremely durable and will take the stress, abuse this type of trolling causes.  Trolling big, hard pulling plugs for muskies 8-10 hrs a day over a period of several days, even weeks requires extremely strong, wear resistant line.

Power Pro at 100 lb test has the same diameter as 20 lb mono, not exactly "rope".  There are several other good super braid brands on the market, for me Power Pro has passed the test of durability, time for muskies both trolling and casting so I stick with it.

okay, yeah, i had the idea of using a swivel as well, and theyn it broke when i had a carp on lol. and as for the vanish, i agree its junk, ran through a spool very quickly on my other rod due to excessive birdnesting and it seems to become brittle very quickly. i'll have to try Pline, it is so inexpensive i kinda shyed away from it, thinkin it was garbage. i'll try it

Do you even need a fluorocarbon or mono leader?

I would think braid would be invisible when trolling

Jerry Brown Hollow Core spectra is some of the best you can get but, Power Pro or Gorilla Braid will probably work just fine.  I use Power Pro on most of my reels.  If you want to stay with the all-around reel, I'd stick with the 30# spectra and when trolling for muskies, possibly put one of the small(not the larger ones) dipsy snubbers inline 5-6' ahead of the lure and run a heavy mono or fluoro leader (60-80#) to the lure.  Spectra is great but, if you have no shock absorption what so ever, you will rip out lots of hooks from fish lips and/or break off a lot or snap your rod on violent hits.  Also, when trolling, set your drag just tight enough to hold the line on the spool at trolling speed.  With the minimal amount of stretch, even with a snubber and loose drag, you'll still get a good hook set at those trolling speeds.  I use Seaugar (sp?) fluoro mostly but have used Pline in the past and never had an issue.  I used to fish the salt alot and I caught many a bull red (to 45") and sharks (to 5.5') fishing the surf on what was essentially a Lake Erie dipsy set-up with 8'-0" Shimano Triton Hvy action rod, TRD200 reels, and 30# power pro.  I had real surf gear too but, at the time, I was running 5-8 surf lines and didn't have a full compliment of surf gear so I used what I had.

Make sure it is 100% flourocarbon (will be printed on label) not the imitations , fluroclear or others . I use 20# P-Line fluro in a 300 yard spool was around $18.00 last I bought it .

i use the heaviest line available for muskies 80 pound is usually clearenced at the end of the season, stren braid is new but i tried it this year and pulled in 2 stumps,1 snapper turtle i snagged, and several small muskies, and bunch of pike. the only thing is they dont care, they are the pinnacle predator.alot of the time for walleyes we use 20 pound braid with fluoro leaders.the no stretch can be a double edged sword, set your drag, the walleye mouth seems soft, youll rip the bait out of em alot if you dont pay attention.
