Help Me Find A Choke!

Anyone know where I can get a full choke for a spr310 o/u that will shoot steel also? The factory one says no steel and apparently, the remington chokes dont fit the **** gun. Explain that to me... an import, by remington that remington chokes dont fit in. Anyhow, I could use the 870 for steel, which may be the only option, but Id like to be able to shoot steel out of the over under, just incase.

Use a non-toxic shot other than steel.

Don't shoot steel out of a full choke -- it is dangerous.  A Modified choke with steel patterns the same as a Full choke with Lead.

if these guns are still manufactured by Baikal, which they were when they were marketed by EAA, check this link.

You might end up with a big bulge behind the choke or worse.

A steel full choke might have a larger diameter than a lead only choke.

believe it or not, my 870 patterns better with steel using my skeet choke shooting at ducks over decoys within 35 yards.  Remember, steel shot doesn't conform to the other shot in the wad.  It's so hard that it bounces off itself, resulting in erratic patterns.  If using a more open choke, it doesn't get forced together as it would in a tight choke, resulting in tighter, more uniformed patterns.  Its almost backwards form lead.  Try it on paper.  My group all either use skeet or improved.  One guy even uses a cylinder choke and he knocks 'em down every year.

    jeremy,

trulock makes them.  All are steel rated within the proper constrictions.  While you're there, pick up a Skeet 1 choke and an IMod.  Put the sk1 in the bottom barrel and the IMod in the top.  You'll never take them out of the gun.

The IMod is the tightest choke they (trulock) approve for steel.  It is because steel pellets don't compress together the same as lead does.  You can't and shouldn't constrict them as much as lead.  Since they are a harder and more uniform pellet they will pattern without a lot of flyers so long as you don't constrict too much.

My 310 normally has SK1/IC in the bottom barrel and IMod in the top when I am jump shooting birds (including ducks with steel and pheasants).  I open up a bit when we are doing training sessions or shooting small birds (quail and woodcock).  The IMod with 3" Kent fast steel #4 has flat slammed ducks for me out to 40 yd during field trials.  I have yet to wound a bird with that combo.

    Thanks,
    Rick

Oh, forgot about the threading question.

Remchoke is remington's standard choke.  The SPR series are Baikal guns.  Remington doesn't make them, just import and sell them.  So they are limited to what Baikal builds them with.  They could switch chokes, but why?  It would cost money to change the factory over which would raise the cost of the gun.  The SPR are entry level guns at entry level cost.  Most people don't use more than the chokes that come with the guns.  The ones who do want more mostly know of trulock.

    thanks,
    rick

that works.  The Baikal chokes are fine with steel from Mod and less.  They don't say it on the tube usually, but I've never heard a problem.

Also, you can order the trulocks from trulock or from Midway.  midway is usually cheaper.

    Jeremy,

Is there a reason you are choking so tight?  Are you pass shooting ducks or geese?

    dunc,

I don't know about him, but when I am using my IMOD I'm expecting shots in the 25-40 yd range. I've patterned it at 40 yd and know what it looks like with #2 steel and #6 heavy (quite similar actually). For mallards during hunt tests it can't be beat. 2.75" #4 faststeel has anchored birds for me out to 45 yd. Sometimes a first shot will just clip the bird and you need to put it down in the target mark range. The IMOD does it. I also like it for jump shooting birds. When they take out at 30 yd I know I still have a shot.

for my upland stuff though, it normally stays in the truck for something lighter.

    Thanks
    Rick
