Thanks...interested in your cooler and boards...I am in Grove City, but will be heading down your way to Latrobe for the 4th...maybe we could meet up.

As far as getting on the water this year, not likely.  The biggest thing I need that was left off this list is a rebuild on a 200hp outboard that is on the boat now, or better yet a 150hp or larger replacement.

    Mick Fish,
Is that outboard a Mercury by chance?  I think I know the boat you were looking at as I had seen it on Craigslist and emailed the guy (located in your area).  Did you get it below his asking price?  Should be a decent Erie troller when you get it outfitted and repowered.

As far as life jackets go, I think I saw an ad recently on craigslist (Pburgh, Erie or maybe one of the Ohio cities) for Type 1 pdfs for $10 a piece.  Those are the best for an offshore boat and if they are in good condition, a decent deal.  Looked like the guy had several for sale.

With a little skill you can build your own tie bar to tie the motors together for steering on the kicker. Use air hose connectors, if you can get a look at someones tie bar it'll be easy to figure out. As for throttle control I bought one of the digital "trollmaster" units direct from the manufacturer and I love it. You'll have more precise control of speed than you'll ever get from conventional cable controls. I built my own boards from plans I found on the internet, might have $20 bucks in them total. If you watch you can find dipseys on sale for less than $10, they might be some weird colors though - black spray paint will fix that. Flares - buy new ones, they have expiration dates, I found a 4 pack on the clearance rack at Kmart last year that still had 3 years left till expiration $9. Look for an Eagle FishElite 480, Sonar/GPS combo they run around $350, you might find a decent used GPS/Finder but watch for bad transdeucer and GPS pucks they'll cost you almost as much as a new finder. With the kicker plate just make sure it is built for the weight of your kicker, or heavier incase you end up upgrading to a 4 stroke higher hp. Enjoy the new boat, if it weren't for the money spent outfitting is alot of fun.

+1 on the trollmaster...Way better than a remote throttle....Easy to install as well...As far as the tie bar...I got the EZ Steer link...I was going to build my own but said screw it and spent the money on it so I could leave it on all the time and raise and lower my outdrive without taking the bar off...

Have not been one here in a couple days...thanks for all the responses and info guys!

eyesandgillz- I believe it is the same boat you are thinking of...Wellcraft Sportsman.  Got a real nice deal from my neighbor.  Nicely taken care of boat with new bimini and full cover.

bulldog & bigslick-  I have never heard of the "trollmaster"...off to google it now.

I think I under estimated how much I am going to be spending to get fishing though!  Have to make sure it does not lead me to divorce, as she is not near as enthusiastic as me about getting it fishing

The current motor is a 89 200hp Mercury Black Max...does anyone know what size/age range Mercury motors with be compatible with the controls and hook ups???

    Thanks again!

googled the Trollmaster...does not look like it will be an option for me as I have a 85 Johnson 9.9 2 cycle...they seem to only do Johnsons in 4 cycles???

I bought mine direct from the company, call them and see if they can put one together for you. The actuator is actually a servo off of a remote controlled helicopter. It's really nice to be able to turn a little dial on the dash and change speed in tenths of a mph.

I have the bracket you need, especially if you do go to 4 stroke.

You might try Harbor Freight for you horn, flares, etc.

Sam's for big cooler (about $59.95)

Buy your life vests at the end of the season (when they put them on sale) if you're not going to launch this year! (I've bought some good ones at Sam's, Wal-mart, K-mart, etc. after they've marked them down!)

I have 2 Okuma Contenders 20D linecounter reels loaded with 20 lb. Fireline.

Also, 2 Ouma Classic CPDR 8"6" trolling rods, line weight 1- - 25 lb. and 3/8 to 1 1/2 ounces lure.

Used twice but 5 years old, they are like new.

Paid $150.00 for all, you can have for $80.00.

I got a bunch od regular life jackets I will sell very cheap although I would recommend purchasing type 1 offshore jackets for lake erie. they are more bouyant and would more likely save your life in rough water if you needed them.

Thanks everyone!  I have been BUSY!

Sold the quad and spent the proceeds very quickly!!!

Ran to South Bend, IN for a complete 200hp Merc, of which I am only using the powerhead.  Got the Lowrance depth finder and hand held Garmin GPS off my neighbor who sold me the boat.  The guy I have working on the boat made me a deal on a older rebuilt Evinrude 9.9 long shaft w/controls...with this motor I do not need a kicker mount and all the other BS plus I get to leave the Johnson on the little boat year round now .  I got 2 nice used downrigger rods from a friend...ordered 2 8'6'' Okuma combos w/ 30DX reals for $43 each and 2 10' Okumas with the 30DX for $46 each!  Bought a used set of Super Ski planer boards.  Same guy had 3 older Cannon Mag 10 downriggers with swivel bases and dual rod holders for $175 each, picked up 2 of those.  Also had used Type I PDF's $40 for 5 of them.  Picked up 4 used Tite Loc rod holders for $15 each.  Ordered an anchor and 150' of line along with a trolling net from Cabelas.  Got a giant box of spoons (mostly salmon spoons) for $90...the box is SWEET!  Ordered 10 Michigan Stingers (your choice of color) off eBay for $39.99.  Buddy hooked me up with some other spoons and homemade harnesses.  Got a 120qt Igloo cooler form Walmart for $51.  PLUS A LOT of other stuff!  Only really need to rig it all up now!  I could use some more planer board releases, harnesses, and still need to get the flares.

Heading to Shenango tomorrow to get it wet for the first time...I sure hope it all goes well!  With any luck I may be out there NOT catching any walleye with everyone else in the next week or so!!!
